PA: Carry in state parks?

My understanding of the situation is that there are conflicting elements of state law. It would seem that an LTCF would supercede the prohibition of arms in state parks, but this has not been tested and sorted out in court.

Accordingly, the current concensus seems to be NO. The commission of state parks takes to the position that if you are found with firearms in a state park, you'll be arrested unless you have an LTCF, in which case you will be asked to LEAVE. If you do NOT leave, you will be arrested for trespass.

Don't know about other states but in Ky I think guns are barred in all state parks. Don't know if you can be arrested for having a gun in a state park or not . All they can do is ask you to leave from private parks. In no way would I encourage you to break the law BUT a properly concealed small gun is darned hard to spot.

If you have a PA LTC and they catch you, they'll most likely order you to leave. If you refuse, you'll be arrested for armed trespass. They will not knowingly allow you to CCW, or open carry except under extremely limited circumstances as described on their website.

Beren, what would be considered a state park? Gettysburg? The Lehigh Valley Game preserve? Two Rivers Landing?

(we're planning trips to those places this summer and wondering if I can carry)

G'burg is NATIONAL (sic-FEDERAL) PARK AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bad JuJu - no carry at all within Fed/Nat'l lands..................similar to Liberty Square in Philly...................

Isn't Gettysburg a national monument?

No, I don't know ... I just always assumed it was. If so, it falls under National Park Service rules ==> NO GUNS. Better do some research before your trip.

Well, I know that Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are national monuments and subject to National Park Service rules. I don't believe there are any state parks within Philadelphia city limits -- parks such as Fairmount Park are city parks.

I attended a gun show in Philly last weekend, as it happens, and had a nice chat with a vendor who happened to be a Philadelphia police officer. So I took the opportunity to ask him about the recent news stories regarding the city's efforts to enact gun control laws and regulations.

His attitude was "Ain't gonna happen." This is from a city police officer, and he's smart enough to know that the state of PA has preemption laws -- the city can't pass gun laws because the state has reserved the power to regulare firearms at the state level.

So get a PA non-resident permit and enjoy your visit.
