Hi all. I remember reading and article in a gun mag many years ago about paper patching jacketed rifle bullets. Not liking the cost of match grade bullets, I was kicking the idea around of paper patching a .30 Sierra Matchking (I already have a good supply of these bought years ago when they were affordable) to fire out of a .311 groove diameter 7.62 x 54R rifle. Does anyone know an online step by step source or has anyone here done it with jacketed bullets? Thanks!

Mike

I read articles on it years ago (lead and jacketed paper patching), and found it intriguing, but never tried it. I am sure there are places out there who handle supplies, but I don't know off hand where.

I do remember it talking about using thin tracing paper that can be had cheaply.

I think the article I read was in an old American Rifleman, but can't be sure. At the time I thought it to be interesting but rather useless. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. I've heard of reloaders who've gone and loaded .30 Matchkings in their .311 Nagants and such, but the accuracy was rather lacking, which defeats the whole purpose of using Matchkings.

I remember them mentioning tracing paper also, vellum? They went into how big to cut your wrap according to the caliber and a special fold for the base. I could very well experiment, but would rather not waste components that are getting pricier by the week.
