just want to add that - pretty much all auto accidents, where there is $$ involved are reported. not all violent crimes are reported, probably fewer than one might imagine, certainly a large number are not reported at all.
Further, most lawful defensive gun use incidents do not require shooting, and though it is always a good idea to be the first to report, many are not reported.

So, your odds of being involved in a violent crime are higher than your odds of being involved in an automobile accident. In this light, carrying a handgun is just like wearing a seatbelt.

Interesting, I almost always carry and wear a seat belt on public roads but didn't read the link. What are the statics for people that died because they didn't have a gun vs people that didn't wear a seatbelt and died?

Statistics can and are manipulated by the folks presenting them.

That is why people that use them, love them. Not really manipulation rather than just stating facts in a way to back our argument. I can say how bad the corona virus is by stating that over 50,000 people have died since February. Then again, using 2017 data from the CDC, 675,000 people (7,500 a day) died, on average over the same time period, 92% of them from natural causes. If you remember there were no news stories about them...

What would we do with them if we had them?

There are some decisions that can be reasonably made on the basis of actual data, and some that cannot.

I do not need any numbers to aid in my decision to fasten a seat belt, to lock the doors, to strap on a firearm, to discard questionable meat, or to do a host of other things.

I agree 100%, it's pretty easy to make decisions, some that people make are rational at times even based on factual information, others might be based on theory, speculation, abundance of caution, paranoia or even delusions but in the end they are all pretty easy to make.

My anti gun friends know I shoot a lot and reload. And I know they favor stricter gun control laws. None of them know when I conceal carry, of course. We appreciate our friendship too much for them to call me paranoid or for me to to say something negative about their beliefs.

Well, just for the Internet picky police, it is Dr. GEM - haha - I'm a jerk. Also, I'm not a gem or jewel of any sort. Those are my initials, my mom thought the word was cute. I hated it as a kid.
