I want to parkerize a shotgun receiver and barrel. Do I need to plug the barrel beforehand? If so, what should i use?

Yes.

Rubber corks or tapered wood plugs should work.

Just be aware the heat will tend to push them out so they need to be tight.

The best way to plug gun barrels for bluing or parkerizing is to use a length of threaded rod, two nuts and some plugs made from a hot chemical-proof rubber or plastic.

In addition to plugging the bore so the plugs can't blow out, the threaded rod gives you some nice handles to handle the barrel with.

Definitely want to use the threaded bar and tighten the nuts down so they compress the rubber corks. Even more important with a rifled barrel. You just can't get the plugs in tight enough by hand to be sure.

I've Park'ed a few rifles and most recently an H&R 929 pistol. In the rifles I used rubber plugs to complete satisfaction; none of them budged. I used corks in the H&R and they too worked fine.
Honestly, I wouldn't even bother plugging a shotgun barrel. With the slick surface present on the interior of a shotgun barrel, I doubt much of the solution will adhere to the metal and even if it does, it should be easy to clean it out.
Years ago before I started doing my own Parkerizing, I sent a rifle I had built off to a 'smith for a Parkerizing job. When it returned, the interior of the barrel had Parkerizing in it. I just cleaned the barrel and have been shooting the rifle ever since. Evidently it had no effect on the barrel because it's one of the most accurate rifles I own!

plug the shotgun with the corks and rod. If it was a rifle that is chrome lined..no worries...it won't stick to the chrome.
