Well hello there guys! I am getting my possibles ready for the trail and woods this spring/summer and I find myself in need of a good patch knife for my plains rifle. I'll be using it to, what else, cut patches for my rifle. I also need a good neck or belt sheath to come with it.

Anyone know where to get a good traditional styled patch knife that will cut nicely and be durable? I see this little job over at Track of the Wolf but I've no idea if it's a good one:

Please recommend me a good patch knife. Thanks all!

Track of the Wolf, October Country and Jedidia Starr can be trusted for quality. What about a kit? Having your gear made by you makes it special.

Sticks in my head that some patch knives were old straight razor blades set into a fixed handle.
Ah, makes sense!

I wonder what blade length would I need? The one from Track has a 2 1/4" blade but I'm not sure of that's a good length or not. But it comes with a neck sheath which looks to me like a handy way to carry it.

I was going to suggest the Green River West Coast paring knife, like the one in the second post. Very versatile blade; I've made maybe a dozen of them into patch knives, but keep selling them or going them away to new shooters.

Very nice! Are you going to sheath it?

I have a patch knife sheath sewn on the shoulder strap of my possibles bag. However, I like this knife enough to make a neck knife sheath for it also.
This knife takes a keen edge.
The blade lies flat on the rifle muzzle and the gentle sweep makes short work of cutting excess patch material from a started ball.

Been huntin' with flintlock for over 25yrs.........what's wrong with a regular neck knife.....why do ya have to have a patch knife ?

So that's a small utility knife......I been treking / primitive camping and hunting with flinters since the late '80s....I've found over the years that those type of little trinkets have really no use in the field....more for show or the range / shoots and that can easily be lost out of your bag while on the trail or hunting in the thickets.....in the field you take and use what's necessary and what works....my neck knife with it's 6 1/2" blade works well for just about everything......no need for patch knives.

35 years ago I bought a green river knife that resembles a paring knife. Carbon steel. Still going strong. All you have to cut with it is cloth, so it really doesn't need to be high speed low drag. No sheath, but probably a good idea.
