In a pawn shop??

Imagine that..

Somebody's Great Grandson must have needed some drug or beer money!!

Mercy!!!

I live in a college town, and it's simply amazing what the kiddies bring in to pawn sometimes!!!

Drumroll.......

Whoever took it there let them steal it. Marked $379, I offer $250, got it for $250 plus tax. The condition is incredible! I can't wait to shoot it!

Excellent find!

I picked up a Beretta 1934 9mm Corto (.380) marked 1941 RA (Royal Army) for a little over $200 about 4 years ago.

Sometimes you get the gems, sometimes the lemons.

You got a gem.

7.65mm?

I'm speechless.
I think it's an early 25 ACP Mauser, Voodoochile. I don't think the 32's have the little thumb-latch on the removable sideplate. The later 25's don't either, IIRC. There's a good article about them here:

It's in excellent shape for it's age. Those are hard to find now.

I would never have guessed what the factory was, though.

Stolen? You really think so?

I'm pretty sure dumping guns at Pawn Shops is a thing of the past. I could be wrong, but I think there are too many checks in place to get away with that. Plus, there would be a paper trail back to the front door of the guy who had to give his Drivers License.

Even some of the most incompetent thieves these days have a fake drivers license. There are programs where they can print them right off their computer. In each major city in the country there are also companies that sell complete sets of identification including SS cards and where the swipe on the back of the card works on the fake DL.

The businesses in most cities are usually clumped together, it was the same exact way in Phoenix and Los Angeles. By product of massive illegal immigration. Here in Dallas they're all pretty much located together on Harry Hines Blvd. There were some major busts down there a couple years ago and the signs came down for awhile, but they're back up now.

I wouldn't put too much faith in a copy of a DL being left, especially when there's very little follow through and investigation because they're covered up with this kind of crime.

Browning,

In Texas the pawn shops do take ID when pawning AND the LEOs do check the serial numbers to see if the item was stolen.

How do I know? Two detectives once came by and wanted a .22 I had bought from one back cause it was a stolen gun. The pawn shop made good on what I had paid for it.

Pawn shops are required to hold the spawned items for police inspection.

So once out of many many purchases.

Sure a few are stupid enough to pawn a stolen gun, but most end up being sold on the street according to convicts who have been interviewed.

Yes, I know they take ID. Used to work at a gun shop for a couple years in the 90's. That's why I put the part about fake ID's in. A fake ID that's bought from web based novelty shop, made using a home printer and a program or bought at a Haji shop using customer supplied information leads nowhere (kind of the whole point in using them).

Before the net took off in a big way on the pawn slip that was sent to PD at some businesses there used to be a tendency to fudge/transpose on the model or serial number if they felt somewhat hinky about the customer. They didn't want to take a loss, but they wanted the gun.

Now there are resources for them to use to check its status before they buy it. Some store owners just didn't want to lose the money that they paid for the gun (or any property that had serial numbers on it) and if PD showed up and took the gun they were out that money.

That's not really all that uncommon, especially with pawn shops.

Deaf, FYI, RA is Regia Aeronautica (Royal Air Force). Royal Army is RE, Regio Esercito and Royal Navy is RM, Regia Marina.

FWIW, that Mauser is what collectors call the "standard sidelatch" and Monac is correct; they were made only in 6.35mm (.25 ACP).

Research pointed me to Griffin and Howe, custom gun makers and now holders of the Von Lengerke and Detmold sales records from ~1900 to ~1929. I sent them an email and expect to hear back with sales numbers for the year of my gun, maybe a total number of how many Mauser Model 1910 were marked with the VL&D!

Nice Score!

Congrats on a great find! Some gems I've found at my local pawn shop:

SW 686-$400!!!!....:)
Chromed M1903 MK1!-$600
Remington M1891 Mosin Nagant (sporterized)-$150
Savage 99e .243-$500
German SIG p226 9mm-$400...:)
Beretta 92fs-$450
Colt 1908 vest pocket .25 (rough cond.)-$150
Colt Official Police (aftmkt nickel)-$250

But my dad wins hands down. Ten years ago he found a Belgian Francotte 12ga side by side in a dusty Pawn shop in Middle of Nowhere, Illinois for $200....now with a factory letter of provenance it is in his vault and insured for 10 large....

CleanHarry: Yes, it looks like the Neckar valley near Heidelberg. My wife was 'geboren' there and lived there again in the early 60s.

rcmodel: If you are near Lawrence, some of those selling to pawnshops are probably anti-gun. The sellers probably did not want to deal with/knew about Gunbroker, or as stated above, were desperate for cash.
