I need to pick a X-Mas present and a new Rifle case would work just fine.

Any pros & cons between the

Pelican 1750 ($178 & $35 shipping = $213)

and

Hardigg Storm iM3300 ($175 & $20 shipping = $195)

Thanks,

Jeff

Questions:

1. What is the length of your long gun
and is it scoped?

2. What are the dimensions of the cases ?

FWIW = I have the Cabelas "Bulletproof" case
that they advertise for an AR-15 or the
Thompson Center Encore Rifle It is
44 inches in length about 4 inches deep
( 2 inch halves ) and 13 inches wide.

My 1894 Marlline with 20 inch barrel and 37
inch OAL fits and I believe there is foom for
another one as well. This case was $ 170.
I have the Cabelas pistol cases as well, my gun
smith/dealer said they have comparable quality
with the Pelicans.

I'll go price a full length Cabelas BC rifle case
not the greatest web site imho \

Cabelas "Bulletproof" SIngle Rifle Cases

44" x 14" x 4"
52" x 14" x 4"
52" x 10" x 4" - must be for unscoped rifle?

They're all $ 169.99 made from marine quality
aluminum, solid stainless steel clamps and a rod that
slips through the clamps for lock up with a
sturdy brass padlock they also sell.

I like the Pelican style with the wheels standard.

Both of these boxes are 50 inches long.

It is for a new BLR - 42 inches long.

Check the weight of the box. From my experience, Pelican cases are REAL heavy. Way beyond the necessary "heavy duty" needed. I compared the Storm case for a laptop to Pelican I use at work. Next time I'll be buying a Storm case.

I have a pelican case for my Anschutz rifles. You won't break it or be unhappy with it, but I have no experience with Storm cases. Just don't go with SKB. They suck.

You have picked perhaps two of the best cases you can get without paying double or more. I prefer the Pelican cases because I know a fellow that used to work there and know of the high quality.

I would also go with the Cabelas bulletproof line of aluminum cases.

I have samples of each (1750 and iM3300). Both work equally well in their intended purpose. Of the two, I would give a very slight edge to the Storm as the handles are longer and they are co-molded with rubber on the inside for comfort. Can't go wrong with either, though.

I've dealt with just about every case mfg. there is where I work.

Both the Pelican and the Storm are top of the line.

I like the latches on the Storm a little bit better.

Pelican is molded in CA and the Storm in MA.

Check out Ameripack.com....there pricing is usually hard to beat.

They also have an Italian import called Voyager that is reported to be great and I believe is longer than the others, if that matters to you.

How do the padlock hasps on the Storm rate?

Looking at their small pics on the site they seem pretty thin in comparison to the steel reinforced ones on the newer style pelicans.

IMO

I do not know of any rating system for the lock holes of cases.

IMO, the steel reinforcement is merely to prevent wear on the plastic holes. It does not provide any structural support to the holes as they are basically thin sheets of sheet metal folded over the holes and held in place by a indentations that protrude into the plastic.

The plastic portions of the holes in the Pelican, however, do seem to be a little thicker than the Storm's (both are tapered) and there is more plastic around the outsides of the hole at the outer edges of the case. That is, not considering the metal, the pelican lock holes do seem a little more thicker and plastic reinforced. The holes in the Storm, IMO, still should be able to hold up under constant use.

IMO, it would be easy to defeat both with a good set of chain cutters.

WOW! What a tough choice. It's like, "Should I get a top-of-the-line Leupold or a NightForce scope?" My point being - either is a great case.

Cabelas "Bulletproof" Single or Double Rifle Cases
I have two of these. Both are double rifle cases except one has the rifles sitting upright and the other has them in the normal position of lying on their sides. The one with the rifles on their sides actually hold three of my rifles because I use Warne QD rings and I made a special padded case for up to 5 scopes that I carry with me to the range and on various hunting trips.

There's nothing like rolling into the airport pulling a big Pelican behind you.

"What's that?"

"Uh, bass guitar. I'm with the band."

Thanks hksw for the info. I'm ordering up a few Storm cases right now. I like the pelican cases, but have smashed my fingers on the latches enough times to want to try something else. Having a extra set of latches on the ends can't hurt either as my Pelican 1700 seems to bow up there.

IMO, it would be easy to defeat both with a good set of chain cutters.

Yes, Either the plastic or the lock could be cut pretty easy. Just want enough there to slow someone down since I usually lock them to a fixed point in my vehicle as well...

The newer Pelican cases do now have easier opening latches. The part of the latch is a T-shaped lever and goes across the end of the latch assembly (with the vertical leg going down the middle). Actuating the lever is easy and non-knuckle busting. The Storms is a square push button in the middle of its latch, also easy to manipulate.

Pelican latch.
