I made a post recently looking to replace my OEM composite stock on my Browning X Bolt 30-06. One suggestion took me to Pendleton Stocks made by an outfitter in Oregon. Does anyone have any experiences to share that will lead me to making a good decision if I decide to use Mr. York at Oregon Gungunsmithing?

I've never heard of them, but did spend a little time on their website. Not a lot of details as to construction, but they seem to be well made stocks similar in construction to Brown Precision, MPI, Manners, Hi-Tech Specialties and McMillan. I don't specifically see that they offer one for the X Bolt, but that doesn't mean they don't. Not all of the stock makers will offer one for that rifle.

I've owned all of the above except Manners and MPI. They are all good stocks, but for my money it is still hard to beat McMillan. All of the others have required some final fitting and finish work to fit right that was best done by a gunsmith. Some advertise a little cheaper price, but when you factor in the work needed they end up costing more. A standard weight McMillan will run $499, the lightest weight Edge stock $599

The McMillans I've bought have bolted to the rifle right out of the box and were ready to go. I usually put a bit of bedding in the recoil mortise, but have never noted any improvement in accuracy. They didn't need it, but it is cheap insurance.

The lightest stock McMillan offers is going to be around 22 oz. I see where Pendleton offers a 16 oz version, as does Brown Precision. I don't think you'd want to go that light in a 30-06, 22 oz is still pretty light. A standard weight McMillan is going to be about 32 oz. I don't know how that compares to the Browning factory stock, but most others I've weighed were 28-36 oz.

You are exactly correct in saying that not all the companies you named will make stocks for the X-Bolt. In checking around, the only one other than Pendleton is McMillan. I called McMillan and there is only one straight stock style they offer as a drop in and do not accept customer's barreled actions to bed with their stocks. Looking at Browning's website, they are marketing an X-Bolt gun with this McMillan stock on it as an optional long range package.

Oregon Gunsmithing offers a full line of stock styles for the X-Bolt, color choices and web pattern design color choices. Mr York and I have emailed each other, and he prefers my barreled action in house so he can build the stock and bed it around my action and barrel. This is encouraging to me to have this opportunity as I can't help but believe my results will be superior.

His current waiting time is over 4 months, so there are apparently others who have heard he is doing a good job. Think I may give him a try.
