Penetration: 9mm vs .45ACP

QK,

Ball and Full Metal Jacket are different terms for describing the same kind of bullet...
Hmmm, didn't know that.

I always thought that when someone said ball they were talking about a lead round nose with no jacket.

Technically, ball ammo is simply round nosed, but the common usage of the term has come to mean FMJ ammo. Mike pretty much hit it on the (round) nose. :D

QK,

Nope.

From "The Firearms Dictionary..."

Ball Now used in military circles primarily, word refers back to the days when only round balls, cast from lead, were used. Ball ammunition is jacketed, military ammunition.

My other dictionaries of firearms terms have pretty much the same thing.

Tech Brute,

Technically, no. See the above. Well, unless the bullet is all nose. :)

9mm FMJ will out penetrate .45acp fmj everytime. Don't take my word for it, go test it on something. It is not even close, the 9mm is one of the all time best for penetration. The .45acp is a poor penetrator but that doesn't mean it is a poor man stopper.

Whenever I hear someone state that the .45 will out penetrate a 9mm, I immediatly know they are an idiot and don't know what they are talking about. Just do some simple tests, shoot into some wet phone books or plywood or Grizzly bear skulls.

If you are coming up to PA, Welcome! We have some funny laws up here, like not carrying in a state park even if you have a permit to carry "a firearm" (that's PA speak for handgun). Never heard of wolves, only coyotes and while the black bears are numerous and extending their range, I never heard of a bad human-bear encounter.

Also during hunting season don't carry as auto pistol as only manually operated firearms are legal for hunting. Even if your not hunting an auto would get you dirty looks at the least.

My advise would be a revolver in .357, .41 or .44 mag.

PMC 115 gr FMJ will penetrate over 30 inches it has a thicker coper jacket then most fmj bullets i put one thru a 7x7 inch wood post and then kept going thru another 2x4 wood i was like wow thats alot of wood! i fired a 147 gr american eagle flat point fmj it stuck in the back of the 7x7 wood!

That would depend on the bullet, too.

FMJ, yes, the smaller bullet meets less resistance.

However, various expanding bullets perform differently. A 115 grain 9mm that expands well doesn't have as much momentum behind it as a 230 grain .45, to overcome the drag of the expanded bullet.

OTOH, some of the 165 grain .45ACP defensive ammo I see makes no sense to me: too much frontal area, not enough mass to keep pushing.

If I was going up against a grizzly, I would hope to have something MUCH bigger than either 9mm or 45 acp. I think I would even feel under-gunned with my 10mm Auto or .357 magnum. Using a 9 or 45 against an adult grizzly bear is sort of like using a BB gun against a 300 lb defensive lineman.

To answer the question, I am pretty sure that 9mm FMJ will penetrate deeper than 45 acp FMJ. That being said, if you plan on spending time in griz country, get a gun worthy of the task. Big bore revolvers, 12 ga with slugs, or maybe an M1A with a 20 rounder full of 200 grainers.

Grizzlies are very massive and very powerful animals. You will most likely only have time for one or two shots during a 30 mph bear charge in the bush. You need that one or two shots to count.

The 9mm goes through alot. Go look at some tests. Its just not as good of a man stopper then some larger rounds like a .45.
