My wife decided she wanted pepper spray.

She never brought up the idea of a hand gun. Nor did she like the idea of a taser. So she got pepper spray.... i just hope the guy isnt imune to it....but hope she dont have to use any.

but either one is better than nothing.

Think of it as a condom

my wife insists on anything pink...so choices can be limited.

i would opt for a spray that is direct, not a mist or a one shot. In most cases if she has to use it she may just spray in a panic motion, so a canister shot might not work good....as she may not have time to aim........think of it as the 4 sec bear attack rule.....lol i think its 4 sec.....

You should read the previous "taser" thread. You'll find that the primary recommendation will be for the Kimber or more traditional pepper sprays. You'll also find that tasers are suited for LE, but not civilians, because it holds the BG in place and our goal as a civilian is to get the BG away from us or ourselves away from them. Leaning on the trigger of a taser leashes you to the BG.

I own the PepperGun, have handled the Kimber. For purposes of this thread I will just be brutally honest: I think the Kimber is a very stupid design. It fires it's payload as a single blast (two shots). Pepper Spray really is meant to "spray" so you can zero in on the target's face. It's not like aiming a firearm.

The PepperGun fires a continuous stream of fluid. It has good range and less risk of blowback in wind. The gun shape makes it fairly intuitive to grab, aim and fire. However it is bulkier than can-shaped pepper sprays and may or may not be harder to carry. It also expends it's contents a little faster than most sprays, due to trade-offs made to make it have longer range.

Tasers, well, all I will say is they cost $300 and you have to register them with the company to make them usable. Also, you get one shot. Yes, they can be used as a touch-range stun gun. But touch-range stun guns don't exactly have a great reputation for success in self-defense.

I was in the exact same boat a few weeks ago. My wife hasn't any issues depending on a firearm for defense at home, but she has no interest in carrying a handgun.

I have been able to argue the usefulness of pepper spray and settled on the Mace Pepper Gun due to its range.
I was looking at the Taser C2 but besides costing ten times more than the pepper gun, it only provided one shot. If one of the two probes missed or for whatever reason did not complete the circuit, then all she'd be left with is touch-tase, essentially a glorified stun gun that can only be used at melee ranges when the assailant has closed the gap.

Recently I had been "tased" for training, where one previously-fired probe was taped to an ankle and another to the upper thigh and a five second jolt will seize those muscle between the electrodes in the most painful way. No amount of machismo will allow a man to overcome the effects within those five seconds. Granted, the C2 provides a 30 second jolt, but again that's only good if both probes hit the target and close doesn't win any prizes.

I was also touch tased during this class and found it was nothing like the tase with the spaced probes.

My wife is quite happy with the Pepper Gun I purchased her. I believe she took to it quickly due to it being pink, but I took to it when she was able to nail me twice in the face with the water practice cartridge at 15-20 feet within the first three shots.
Her first shot hit high in the chest and neck, but the LED flashlight (which indeed is bright) allows corrections to be made for follow-ups.

I was also impressed that even though she was only able to shoot about four one-second burst, my shirt and face were thoroughly drenched. The Mace Pepper Gun puts a lot of product out in a hurry.

I still plan to work on her towards procuring a CCW, though I am fairly confident the Mace brand Pepper Gun will serve her a whole lot better than nothing.

I recommend it, though I'd love to see a Fox Labs put out something similar, maybe one that incorporates a laser (more for intimidation than for aiming) and an LED light that's more powerful still. I'm fairly sure there's enough room in the grip for a 14500-type battery and a 5 watt LED bulb wouldn't be a bad thing.

I am Taser and OC pepper spray certified and I teach citizens how to use both.

Taser Brand devices made by Scottsdale AZ based Taser international are going to deliver patented neuromuscular incapacitation. You won't get this with a stun gun or any other electronic control device. The effect (when used properly|) is overwhelmingly effective. You can see and hear what's going on but you can't do anything. You can't control your movements and you lock up ridged as a board and fall down. The Taser C2 will go for 30 seconds allowing the user to drop the Taser and flee the scene. Call Taser and send them your police report showing you used your C2 Taser and they will send you a brand new one.

Pros:

It is the only device short of lethal means that can truly immobilize an attacker.

It only affects the person hit with the probes.

The laser sight on the device alone is enough to de-escalate less lethal encounters about 80% of the time.

CONS:

Both probes must hit the attacker to work

Standing too close you won't get a good probe spread and it won't stop the attack

You only get one shot

If the attacker is wearing thick or baggy clothing it won't work.

It can be used as back up drive stun device but it is pain compliance only.

Tasers have a 5 year expected useful life and they do have issues from time to time. It is an electronic device and can't be dropped and you can't get it wet.

Pepper Spray: Causes involuntary physiological effects on most subjects.

Pepper Spray is an inflammatory agent and it causes dilation of the Capillaries in the eyes causing the eyes to forcefully shut. Breathing int the agent causes inflammation of the respiratory tract reducing breathing to short shallow breaths. Skin contact causes intense burning sensations.

Pros:

Can be used on multiple attackers if needed.

Inexpensive and has a long 4-5 year shelf life depending on brand.

Causes involuntary effects and is very distracting. In most attacks the victim is able to shoot the stream in the eyes causing the attackers eyes to shut. This gives the victim time to get away.

Can be exposed to water and dropped without damaging the device.

Cons:

Is effective only when it hits the face.

If using a fog or cone spray it can blow back into the users face. Stream is best for outdoor defense. Use cone or fog sprays for indoor defense to run someone out of your home.

IF used indoors it can evacuate a building. This happened when one of our students had a friend set her Spitfire Pepper Spray off after thinking it was a flashlight.

So to sum this up both can be useful and both have advantages and disadvantages. I recommend Pepper Spray over a Taser as in field use they have about the same effectiveness rating (when you account for missed shots or thick clothing with Taser). The Pepper Spray gives you the advantage of multiple shots and regardless of what you have heard the right brand of OC Spray is debilitating on most people. It is a distraction device and it certainly will distract.

I have heard some good things about the Pepper Blaster and some bad things such as missed shots. Here is an article where someone used it and missed with both shots.

I prefer and recommend Sabre Advanced 3 in 1 formulation to my students. Sabre combines Red Pepper Spray with CS Military Tear Gas and UV Dye. This formula combines the inflammatory effects of OC with the severe facial burning of CS Tear Gas. Sabre Red is also a good choice.

Hope this helps and stay safe

P.S. Most people are instantly thrilled when they find out their pepper spray shoots 25 feet away. However they won't be using it that far away. In over 90% of confrontations Pepper Spray is used at distances of 4-6 feet. Also, many people don't understand that in a court you will have a hard time justifying someone was a threat to you if you sprayed the person across the street. A good OC spray only needs to spray 4-6 feet to be effective. The Sabre units fire 10 feet but they do make some that fire 18-25 feet away.

I've been pepper sprayed. I've pepper sprayed others.
I've been tased. I've tased others.

They both suck compared to a handgun and neither are anywhere near a substitute. If I was forced to choose between them, though, I would pick the pepper spray. Just make sure it is 10% OC and try to get her to pair it with a knife (they go good together)

I would really like to a good test on real people in a somewhat scientific unbiased designed study.

Take 1 subject, conceal 3 or 4 of your top pepper spray choices and have him fill out a questionaire at the conclusion. Enough of the redneck idiots on youtube, as it tells us nothing except you are a dumbass with no shirt on!

Same study with the stun guns and taser.

Bought my wife a C2, has gone back to factory twice for bad power supply, won' t be getting another.

I understand. When the C2 first came out we purchased 5 units and 3 had various issues (2 completely quit working). In contrast I have purchased around 100 SABRE Pepper Sprays since 1994 with no issues. That's 12 bucks vs 400 bucks. I'll take pepper spray.

Also look at the Kimber Pepper Blaster II. It has received very good reviews both on the street and in gun magazines. Watched a video of a guy hit with it and he threw up.

I'm on my second C2 Taser. The first just stopped working. Wasn't dropped and diddn't get wet. Sent it back to Taser and they replaced it. So far the replacement is working.
