Does anyone have a link to data comparing Blazer JHP performance (expansion/penetration) to Federal Personal Defense, Ranger, or Speer Gold Dot? 9mm and .40 in particular.

I'm wondering if the price advantage of the Blazers is offset by poor performance. Blazer FMJ is about the cheapest good practice ammo you can get. If it's effectively the same as their JHP (POI, recoil, etc) then paired with the JHP for defensive use you can use the same amount of money to get a lot more practice in. Assuming the JHP works, that is.

with my 1911 I have had failures using CCI blazer but then again 1911's can be picky.

CCI "brass" works flawlessly though.

CaliBurn- CCI loads most of their Blazer JHPs with Gold Dots, which includes all standard calibers (9mm, .40, .45), so performance is very close to the more expensive stuff sold with the name Gold Dots, becuase the only difference is the case material.

Although it isnt 9x19 or .40, it will give you an idea of how well the other calibers work.

If you are looking for another cheap load, check out Winchester White Box JHPs. Ive heard nothing but good about them, and from the pictures ive seen, it performs pretty well. Several people on this website as well as GlockTalk.com have tested it with good results, and I hope to test it sometime soon.

It comes in 115 or 147 grain in 9mm, although I prefer the 147 grain bullet. From what ive heard, Winchester use Silvertip bullets, only without the silver coloring.

I picked up a full case of CCI Blazer from Natchezzs for $160 including shipping. I've heard a lot of good things from the 1911Forum.com people, and I figured at that price it was worth giving things a shot. My Springfield Armory MilSpec has been pretty tolerant of things thus far (2 FTE and 1 FTF, which I suspect are a result of a crappy magazine and a crappy extractor), so we'll see how it turns out later.

I've never seen any expansion/penetration data, but I have shot a bunch in .45acp (200gr.). I have had no feed problems with it. My subjective input based on a few afternoons of shooting it along with Blazer FMJ, Magtech, S&B, WWB and probably some others is that it feels a bit hotter than the Blazer FMJ which I suspect has a little better velocity specs than most if not all other standard FMJ ammo. I'm sure it would expand and penetrate enough to mess me up pretty bad.

Good deal. I'm glad you don't have to go to the $12 for 20 rounds prices to get good hollowpoints. That would make regular practice too expensive.
