Hi,

Just got a new Blackberry. The case will not work with thick carry belts. What do you guys do or use in this case?

Greg

I usually carry my Treo in my shirt pocket, but I did get a leather belt case for occasions where I just don't have a pocket. I noticed that it won't handle thick belts.

So, I'm thinking of something like this -

They make a larger size for really big portable devices, but I think this one is the right size for most smart phones.

I've had this problem with bigger devices in the past for a long time now. I am surprised no one makes a case with a clip for thick belts. Do cops or EMT types need to clip a cell phone on their belt?

Let's kick this up a notch. It's kind of a stretch to consider cell phone cases as firearms accessories, but Staff talked this over and we are agreed that cell phones are a highly important part of your situational readiness.

So, along with which case clips fit over large belts, let's discuss the ways that a phone -- or a camera phone, I-phone, etc -- are of assistance before, during, and after a hostile situation.

(FWIW, I think you'd find that many cell phone cases could be easily "hacked" to swap a Tek-Lok in place of the simple belt hook. Check out knife supply stores to pick up a large Tek-Lok for under $10.)

5.11 makes a case that will work on anything from a slim dress belt to a 2" wide duty belt and bigger. I got one at my local gun and police supply store for less than 10 bucks, and it is by far and away the best cell phone case I've ever had. I wear it every day without fail to carry my android phone. I believe they make one for smaller sized cells as well.

Since use of a substantial gun belt is a recommendation it brings with it the additional problems of how to carry magazines, lights and even critical comms like cell phones.

I found a simple after market case at Krogers, of all things, that has a covered spring clip along with an opposite facing snap strap. It fits on my 5.11 leather belts comfortably. I think the combination of a spring clip with a retention strap makes for a convenient and secure way to carry a piece of equipment that will either be the first or second (after the shooting) I'll use when the need to defend myself arrives.

Maxpedition makes a case that fits iPhones and blackberries. It mounts vertically on a clip or horizontally through loops.

Why not make one?

I know some folks don't like the hassle, but I make most of my own stuff of that nature. Both leather and kydex are relatively inexpensive and easy to use even for guys who have never worked with them in the past.

I started out by making a few holsters about a year ago as a complete newb. Nowadays I can make just about anything I need for a fraction of the cost of the professionally made products. Plus they are taylored to my specific desires and they look darn good. Besides holsters, I've made speedloader pouches, cell phone cases, flashlight holsters, mag pouches and a few other odds and ends. Start to finish it usually takes about an hour or two of actual work to make a decent looking, fully-functional holster. I think just about anybody, experienced or not, could buy a piece of leather and figure out how to make a decent holster in an afternoon or two.

I figure most of us THR brothers are fairly industrious DIY kind of guys who enjoy making stuff and saving money. I don't see why more fellows don't go the DIY route on these types of things. I think of these projects in the same way I think of reloading... It's cheaper, more personalized, and something you can take pride in doing yourself.

If you have a police supply outlet in your area, check out some of the cases with clips made for leather duty belts. I picked one up at The Precent...not the most fashionable but works nicely.

I'm not sure what you call thick, but my 5-11 black leather belt is pretty thick. I've had luck with generic "leather" cell phone cases from flea markets. Just get one with the tightest rotating clip you can find. That way the clip won't wear out near as quickly. The one I have now matches the shade and gloss of my belt perfectly.

I just got a new phone this past Monday, Sprint HTC, Evo, 4G. The HTC case works with my belt, which has a stiffener. The inside opening at the top of the belt clip is 1/4" wide.

I agree with bdubz0r, the 5.11 Tactical case has been a great phone pouch for me. Cases with clips always seem to get hooked, caught, or pulled off on something. This one wears like iron, and carries close. Sometimes it takes two hands to close the buckle, but I carry it on the left (clumsy) side.
