My two cents!

Good question.

Small: 223 Remington (781 fp at 200 yards with 55 gr BT)
Medium 30-06 Springfield (2045 fp at 200 yards w 165 gr BT)
Large: 338 Winchester Mag (3060 fp at 200 yds with 225 gr BT)

I have a 45-70 (and old Springfield Trapdoor in scout model) and I like it. However, with a 300 gr round it generates 1786 fp at 100 yards and only 1349 fp at 200 yards. I use it a like my muzzle-loader. I remember watching the round arch across a valley like a mortar round on a 200 yard shot.

This chart illustrates the difference in foot pounds of energy at 200 yards. I am a big believer in looking at energy as it is a pretty good indicator of the utility of the round for various game. (Sorry could not get my picture to load!)

Need nothing more than a 30-06, and 220 swift is a sweetie, and 22lr by far the best small round

.223 - Bobcats fear my 60gr VMax load. Many didn't make it after the red spotlight hit those big eyes....

.30-06 - It would do well in the next category too.

.45-70 - I sure as h-e-double hockey sticks wouldn't want to get hit by 405 grains of lead and copper!

.22 Hornet can be loaded to 3,000 fps with 35 grainers for varmints at close to 200 yrds or down loaded to .22 magnum rimfire specs for table fare.

.308 Win. it has bullet choice out the old wazoo! will shoot up to 180 grainers or down to 125 grainers for moose to white tail /antelope.

any thing that can bite back (bear of the grizzled or polar type) or some thing as large as musk oxen, or a p.o'ed. moose or american bison, deserves, something in the.338 Win Mag caliber class.
