Pick My Truck Gun

OK now throw these into the mix...

Money is no object to buy, but if gun is too expensive or nice, I wont leave it in truck.

Wild's words said to expand to more expensive arms, so long as they don't make ya feel aweful about leaving them in the truck. SVD/SVD-clone seems like a good truck box piece.. for those times when a carry pistol just isn't enough.

End of the day, you get what you pay for. You can get a survival rifle for under 2 bills, but for alaskain game its going to be bolt operated.

Hey, at least I didn't suggest a FAL. Not so sure how it'd do in artic conditions, and it'd definitely be too nice to leave in a truck (probably).

Guys, you don't want something you're gonna cry about if it gets scratched.

I've got an Enfield chambered in .300 Winmag that cost $150. Nope, it's not an SMLE. But it ain't a truck gun, because there aren't any sights.

I'd go for the Russian 7.62x54 carbine myself. Cheap, shoots a big enough round to at least irritate a bear, and you ain't gonna be making 300 yard shots with it anywho...

2nd choice would be a Yugo mauser.

#3 would be a .45/70 lever, but then we're getting into the "may cry if it gets scratched" bit.

When I think truck gun I don't think about fending off the alien/U.N./NWO/etc. invasion. I have two strict requirements for truck guns: they have to be able to take the largest game that is in my immediate area and I prefer a recessed crown. If I were you, I would go for a .375 with a nice set of peep sights installed or with a 1.25-6x VX-III mounted with iron back-ups. Work up some loads so you have enough to take on the griz, take antlered game, and even some underpowered loads for small game. And personally, I like the way a fine wood and blued gun looks when it has seen hard use (except rust of course).

Im actually considering now another Swede...I would probably do a 96/38 and bend down the bolt...I have one now but its too collectory to do that...

Decisions, decisions

A Swede might be nice if you're going hunting or expect to face man-sized threats, but I don't think I'd want to stake my life on anything less than .30 caliber with the larger carnivores out there. I think you should stick with the Enfields and most Swedes are now pretty much collectors pieces.

WildAlaska, your problem is you're asking about 'A' truck gun. I just saw Tremors, the Series, and realized that Burt doesn't carry "A" truck gun. Why should you?

The reason this thread is going so long it that ONE gun will not "cover all tactical possibilities."

You need a long range boltgun with Ooomph, AND something with firepower. An AK and an Enfield. An SKS and a Mauser. One for rabid moose, and one for rabid hordes of mutant zombies.

;)

Of course you would want to hard chrome your truck gun for maximum corrosion resistance. Enfield Jungle Carbine would be nice for size. I love my Yugo M-48. Either .303 or 8mm would be my minimum. SKSs are fun, but they may serve as an irritant to some of the game up here.

There is concern about the heat treat on the Spanish mausers being sufficient for use with .308 win. I believe these were made for .308 CETME, which is substantially lower pressure than .308 win.

Being you'r a master gun craftman; why not get a ratty century arms FNFAL for $350 or so and rebarrel to .358 Winchester. Should work well , should be an easy convert for you and a 250grain ,35grain bullets (or 20 of them) should knock the bejeebers out of any big game;)

Of the choices given, I vote for the #4 Enflield.

That said, how about a Steyr Mountain rifle in .308? 10 shot mag, light syn stock. Not cheap, but useful.
