Picked up my first...an M44 Mosin Nagant

Congrats to the OP. I have the M44 as well and paid a good price for it $150 just a few months ago.

The recoil is comparable to a 12gauge shottie. Not worse than a slug for sure.

The recoil isn't that bad, IMO, unless you are using a bench position that doesn't handle recoil well (personally I don't like bench shooting anyway) or you shoot a ton of rounds.

My 12 gauge 870 with magnum shells always seemed a lot worse than my Mosin. Until I got a Knoxx stock, that is. :D

If you want a carbine length rifle and can't find a numbers matching m44, you might as well just buy a 91/30 and chop it down. You get a better muzzle and the dovetail for the rear sight base, which can be be used with Weaver T-22 bases to mount optics. You can try and heat the base up if you want to remove it intact, but all it takes is a dremel and some patience to cut the top of the rear sight base and use punches or chisels to remove it in two pieces. If you chop the barrel in the right spot, the diameter will be the correct size to use a die to fit a LR308 style muzzle brake.(5/8"-24)

Not to mention you can still find the 91/30's quite a bit cheaper.

don't know about the states, but in europe, most m44 I have seen, are polish, build in the early 50ties.
I own a 1952 pole in arsenal condition, almost unshot.
At gunshows in Europe, they come in 10 pieces arsenal cases.

Recoil is ok to me but the 'light and sound-show' is great.

The trigger on mine feels a bit loose. It breaks clean, but there is some take-up where I feel no tension at all. Like it's free floating. I wonder if the trigger pack is missing a spring somewhere...anyone else feel that in theirs?

I get the point on that, and doubt there's anything wrong.
Unless it's swinging free, don't worry about it. The sear is part of the sear spring. Until you feel that spring move, there actually isn't anything pressing against it.
Nagant triggers are effective, but crude.

This is common. Some people add a pig tail spring to remove that slack. My type 53 (chinese copy) does not have this problem and the trigger is like glass.
