I sell bullets and while digging through some ss109 bullets I found this long tracer. (shown on the right) to the left there is a normal tracer which I have seen thousands of. Could anyone tell me what this longer one with the black paint stripe is? Maybe API or just AP tracer? I am stumped. These are both .22 cal in case anyone is wondering.

Sometimes I want more gun control. I achieve this by using both hands.
LOL maybe the anti's just need more gun control and maybe they might enjoy firearms LOL. Your question... looks kinda like a 5.45mm maybe but I am not sure.

It could be some kind of combo. I'm pretty sure they make (or used to) make tracer rounds that were also armor piercing. Or tracers that were also incindiary.

It's known as an extended range tracer. It's designed to increase the duration of the trace without affecting the ballistics of the bullet.

The short one on the left is an M196 tracer as issued with Viet Nam era M193 ball ammunition.
The longer one on the right is an M856 (L-110) tracer bullet current issue with M856 (SS 109) ball ammunition.

At least that is what Ammo Oracle says.

Percey Shelley is right. The reason current M16s and M4s have 7" twist rifling is to stabilize that loooong tracer bullet, it would not take that fast a twist to stabilize the 62 grain hardball.
