so i have the 1851 and its broke...i can order the part to fix it but while i had it disassembled i was thinking...i want it to fire cartridges..then i got on google and everyone has said it cant be done because of the brass frame...is their anyway of buying a different frame that is compatible with the 1851's guts? if yes where would i get one of these and which ones are compatible? any advice is helpful...i'm a new guy as well

I don't think you will find just the frame for sale at any of the popular parts houses, and if you did it would probably cost as much a new steel frame gun anyway. I am pretty sure you would be better off to purchase a new steel frame 51 from Cabela's for a couple hundred bucks, or maybe find one from a private seller. If you are wanting to fire cartridges it's more cost effective to purchase a richards-mason style conversion 51 from a place like Taylor's & Co..

I agree.
Generally all of the parts are available except for the frame from outfits like VTI gun parts.
What can be done is to buy a Pietta parts gun, beater gun or a frame that's being sold on Gunbroker, eBay or one of the other gun auction sites.

VTI gun parts
Do the barrel frames reliably fit from these parts?
I would love to get a .44 round "sheriff's" barrel for my brass 1851.

thanks drftrman i'll probably do like the other guy said and buy a beater 1860 for parts..just use the frame..and i need a bolt...i broke it...are all the colt parts compatible with one another...well pietta...if i were to buy an 1860 would the bolt fit in my 1851 frame

If you stick with the same manufacturer, the parts are interchangeable.

This is one reason why I tell folks to avoid the brass frames. The savings on the brassers just isn't worth it IMHO. The brassers are great if you need to complete a collection but other than that, IMHO, they should be last on the list not first.

Seems like what you are trying to do for the trouble and expense just isn't worth it. Just go for a new one of these....you know you want to. ;)

by the time you finish switching the frame and buying a $300 conversion cylinder you could have gotten the man with no name special for around the same price. (minus the grips in clemberts pic though)

yeah but then you do have to go through a FFl but if you do the conversion your self no FFL required cost more but the goverment cant take away your gun if they dont know you have it and its more fun to shoot a gun you built.

government isnt going to be taking my guns anyway...what does we the people mean?....means if someone invades america...we the people are going to be doing things about it....i'm sure every citizen with a gun will be fighting..probably some that dont have guns as well...i guarantee gun stores will open their doors if that were to happen

Hay fellows I'm the newbee to the group. Looks like Cabela's has a lot of those pistols on sale for $199.99 + $16.00 S&H right to your door. The brass frames cost less bout $150. + shipping. I have six piettas four colts one is brass framed. What can I say it looks cool, fun shooter. Have two 58 armys, one of them is 20 yrs old now, it's still a good shooter. Also saved up for one Uberti walker, just had to have one. Now with money kind of tight glad they'er steel framed. Cabelas has the part kits for the 51s, 60s, and 61 models. Same kit fits the three. Then the parts kit for the 58s They are about $30. + shipping. and Dixie Gun Works have parts, any one that's going to collect or shoot these pistols should have these kits on hand. Can't say I ever found any frames. Believe I'll go with the rest and say go with steel frames and save money in the long run. Oh the parts for the colts, cyclinders, and barrels, can switch an the colt frames. Be safe. Have fun.
