I'm looking for a pistol caliber carbine, for home defense, that can be suppressed. What are my options?

Preferred caliber is .45acp so I can shoot at my indoor range. Suppressor so it can be shot indoors without hearing protection in a pinch.

Thanks Ben. I'm more interested in the HK - I looked at one today. Is it possible to suppress the USC? My knowledge of suppressors is very limited.

Don't over look the Just Right Carbine (JR Carbine) I own the 9mm model, also offered in .40 S&W and 45 ACP, and it's a hoot to shoot. It would be a prime candidate for a suppressor. Good Luck

If the barrel can be threaded, it can be suppressed. Ideally, if the barrel can be removed, or the action broken down far enough, so it can be put in a lathe and threaded the right way. Definitely a gunsmith chore.

The problem with the Beretta CX4 is that the .45ACP version uses 8 round Cougar magazines..there are some conversion kits around, but IMO they looked like rinky-dink thrift store discards.

My experience with my 9mm SUB2000 showed that if you are using sub-sonic ammo, the 9MM sounds like a .22LR.

you might find you don't need a suppressor, if your plan is emergency use only.

Yep, 147 gn subsonic loaded to around 900 fps. Even shot from a handgun they are noticably quieter than the 124 gn ammo.

Depending on your reasoning for a suppresor you may still want one but starting with a subsonic 9mm load may turn out to be "quiet enough".

Was the intention to use the suppresor indoors in the event of a house incident? If so I would think that the added length would make moving around halls and doorways far more difficult. You'd be exposing yourself long before you enter the room or reached the cross corridor with that extra length. I would think that you'd be far better off with something very short and tight to the shoulder for indoors use.

IIRC, Gun Tests did just an eval. and found the hi point .45 carbine with the highest eval. grade. Got the old issue around here somewhere...

Beretta Cx4.

I've read lots of good reviews about suppressed Cx4's.

Excellent, reliable and affordable carbine and even with a suppressor added on it's overall length is still going to be quite manageable even indoors. Personally I'd kill two birds with one stone and go the SBR and suppressed combo route. I would also go with a 9mm over 45ACP just because you can use higher capacity mags, but that's just me.

I own 2 cx4s, one in .45 and one in 9mm. I have not purchased any aftermarket mags for the .45 but the Beretta mags look fine to me and have functioned flawlessly. I picked up the 9 on a deal I could not refuse. I do have many 20 and even a few 30 round mags for this one and they also function perfectly. I know the 9mm can be suppressed as the the shop I use just did one. Don't know how loud it is but the suppressor is now on my wish list.

TO be fair I have not fired any of the other PCC's. I did fire an AR with a 5.5" barrel in 9mm. Full auto and suppressed, it was a hoot.

I have a USC which i did the UMP conversion to but have yet to SBR it. The barrel is easily removed so yes, it can be threaded. I would say it is without doubt the best .45 rifle on the market but it aint cheap. There is also a conversion that allows it to take grease gun mags which is cheaper than the UMP conversion.

another potential plus I have found to the 9mm carbine with subsonic ammo was a very reduced muzzle flash- which would be a plus in low light conditions.

I have a ruger pc4 (.40cal) its a very rugged little carbine. Ruger also made the pc9 (9mm) Y ou can pickup one for around $500.

Whether it's 9mm or .357 SIG, or .45 ACP or even 7.62 Tok, when I think pistol caliber carbine, I just go right to an AR. There are just too many options to ignore. It won't turn out to be the cheapest route but it will be the most flexible.

I love my .357 SIG that Ron Williams built for me. It's a gas gun just like the Tok uppers he builds. He can build pretty much whatever you want.

Not any more. Though the PC4s remain a bit less expensive, most PC9s now go for $600-$700. I'll be picking up mine today, BTW. :D

FWIW, I considered lots of options for a 9mm carbine, and I still came back to the Ruger PC9 because I thought it was the nicest, most reliable option for the money. 9mm carbines based on the AR platform start at $900-$1000, and that often doesn't even get you a rear sight. Platforms using Glock mags cost even more. And, having also considered the "Just Right" carbines, the reviews made me shy from sinking several hundred dollars into what is often reported to be an unreliable action.

OP, are you in CT? If so, the AWB limits your options further. A pistol grip, detachable box mag and a threaded muzzle all on one gun are a no-go; so I'd say your only real option would be the CX4.
