When i run patches thru i use the jag i pierce the point thru the patch.

I actually am not sure what the loop things are for,i guess for the patch put it seem it would be awkward holding a patch

Also why dry with a patch, isnt that the purpose of the mops?

Also drying the bore with the mops gets it stained like and dirty...what is the way you clean the mops or do you?

Basically i am only 100% sure on the purpose of the brush..whats the correct purpose of jags, loops, and mops? And how do you clean the mops or do you?

Just seems like the mop would be for drying not the patch

When I clean my pistol, I start by folding a patch in half then in half again and threading it thru the loop piece like a big needle. I run that through several times dry. then i wet it in the solvent and run that through several times wet it again and run it several more times. let that sit a few minutes. Then I dry it out with dry patches through the loop. Keep repeating this process with fresh dry patches till they come out clean after runing through several times. Then i get the bristle brush wet that and run it through several times. Then run more dry patches to dry it out completely again. I got that from the instructions on my cleaning kit. So not sure if anyone knows of a better way. Someone did tell me to clean the gun a second time after its been sitting for about a week. Because the carbon gets into the pores of the metal and works its way back out about a week after cleaning it.

Loops or jags, don't matter IMO. I use jags now.

I don't bother with mops. Some clean them, and while I suppose they work they get filthy quickly. I don't really see an obvious benefit to them, but as the last step to get that film of protection, it might be useful.

I am very happy with the Otis system, each kit comes with a mini cd-rom to explain. Clean from breech to muzzle.
There are other systems that do the same.

Slightly off subject, but..I've seen tons of stuff online about cleaning guns. What about clips/magazines? I saw one mention that you shouldn't clean a clip. What gives with that? Maybe just a wipe down? What about silicone?

Okay I assume a jag is the piece that looks like this

and goes on the end of the cleaning rod. if so that part is made so that you only run the patch thru one way, why I could only assume so that you aren't running carbon back and forth thru the barrel. The loop is also for patches and that's used so that you can run them thru back and forth, wuch as webbj0219 stated WITH SOLVANT. This coats the barrel and then you run the brush thru. I like to soak the brush with solvant as well just to keep it wet, then I punch the bore with what I assume is the jag I just call it a bore punch. I have never seen a mop before in any kit that I have used. Also I like to use a caliber bigger brush for the chamber, I.e. I use a .50cal brush for my 45 chamber it works too., by inserting and twisting the barrel to the right so you don't unscrew it from the cleaning rod.
