I have a friend over here in the soon to be federal state of MI. She's 18 and works in a very dangerous neighborhood. In the past 2 months shes be mugged 3 times and has had two B&E's. She wants to buy a pistol for protection, which I wholeheartedly endorse. However, being at the age of 18, she can not go to a dealer. Last I checked MI laws say anyone at the age of 14 can own a pistol, so would FTF private purchase be out of the question? What legal complications could ensue. She wouldn't be allowed to CC but she could keep it either open carry (legal at her place of work) or in her car.

Any advice for my friend? I want to help her but I also don't want her to go to jail or break the law.

She can go and get a pistol purchas permit. She can buy from someone FTF but cannot buy from FFL. The local LEO she goes to for the purchase permit shouldn't give her any problems.

Just curious, what work does she do that results in 3 muggings in 2 months? Door-to-door saleswoman?

There are better alternatives than making decisions that require defending oneself with a firearm 5 times in 2 months.

With her track record she should have a good attorney on speed dial and learn the firearm laws inside and out before she decides to carry. Sounds like she'll definitely be in court defending her actions in the not so distant future.

She should also take a good SD course and learn as much as she can about weapon retention if she's going to open carry.
