I thought the ATFE basically said that once you do that (with the correct length barrel), it can never be undone without having made either an SBR or an AOW or something like that. It comes up every so often when the MechTech is discussed.

I would love to take my XP-100 in 7mm BR with it's 15" barrel and have a muzzle break or similar put on to make it legal with a rifle stock. It would make a great short range (200) deer rifle or predator gun

Well, divemedic, the link in the OP is for a Paris exposition directed at cops and other government agents and agencies, so they don't have to worry about such stuff. Even in the retail business, most other countries make it harder for you to buy a gun but worry less about barrel length than our leaders did in 1934.

The Mech Tech has a 16"+ barrel and is US legal.

That thing will make an excellent prop for future sci-fi movies. Could it be the coveted 40W plasma rifle? Perhaps!

I too question its legality, though I also question the Mech Tech. It was my understand when I was looking into a TC Encore that you can legally convert a pistol to a rifle of proper barrel length, but it is illegal to ever convert back. Unrealistic to ever prosecute unless a legally-registered pistol serial number was ever document in its rifle phase and then transformed back, but still, I don't want to play with fire. Please correct me if this is nonsense.

That is correct. According to ATF (though it disagrees with the Supreme Court) the conversion is a one way trip, handgun to rifle. Can never go back.

Most people reading THR are US citizens and they need to be aware of the potential problem.

The thing in the OP is pretty interesting, though certainly not legal here in the US. Useless probably, but a very interesting idea.

Built by CAA Tactical,

No thanks.

If you are looking at a carbine conversion kit, take a gander at Hera Arms and the Mechtech.

Personally, I'll keep my pistol a pistol and buy an actual rifle or PCC...

What a dumb camera man.

He walks in front of the thing while it's firing.

This was at a French arms show. I wonder what France's laws concerning SBR-type weapons are.

This is correct at this time - if you treat ATF "interpretations" as law. This is a reversal of a decades-long "interpretation" that you can have a pistol, add a 16" barrel and butt stock to it for your "poor man's carbine" purposes and return it to pistol form after your carbine needs are over w/o any issues.

If we could only harness the revenuer's flip-flops, we'd have a huge source of energy . . .
