A pistol scope can be successfully mounted between the rear sight location and the front of the receiver with an XS LeverScout mount with three caveats.
1) The rear sight dovetail must be approx 4" from the front edge of the receiver, to secure the front end of the LeverScout base.
2) The top of the front receiver ring needs two 6-48 scope mount holes D/T'd inline with the bore to secure the rear of the LeverScout base.
3) The pistol scope you choose needs the correct eye relief window distance, for your eyes to get a full sight picture.
To expound upon (3): Unlike riflescopes, long eye relief (LER) pistol scopes have an optical "window", wherein the full field of view is visible.
If the user's eye falls outside of that window, less than an optimal sight pic occur, resulting in reduced speed of use and accuracy.
The eye relief specs are in each scope's tech data info - at least the ones made by reputable makers are.
The first pistol scope I tried had a sight window of 11"-21" - The 11" was too far from my eye, resulting in a mostly black sight picture with a small image in the middle. NOT GOOD !
The second scope's sight window was 9"-17" - Ta-Raaa ! A perfect sight picture resulted (for me), full & bright.
Evidently, the optimum distance, from my eye to a pistol scope mounted on my rifle is a little over 9". YMMV.
I've now used the combo successfully for about five years.
I would advise you to visit either a gun show or several gun shops, with your rifle in tow, and hold various pistol scopes in position over where the LeverScout mount would be, and see what eye relief window suits you, on that gun.
