I'm quickly reaching the point where I can't clearly see my Williams peep sight with these older eyes anymore, and I'm thinking of scoping my Winchester model 94. However, I really don't like the look of the side mounted scopes. Has anyone ever mounted a pistol scope up where the rear sight was and had it work ok? I don't need the magnification as much as I need a clear sight picture.

I've seen it done on a 94. I thought it worked well. The current fad of 'scout rifles' has a forward mounted scope. Lots of folks like it.

Be sure you get a scope with the CORRECT EYE RELIEF distance for where the scope is mounted on the gun. It may/may not be correct if you have a pistol scope.

You'd have to mount a pistol scope much farther forward than the ususal rear sight location,at least the one I have on hand.I have to hold it at about arms length to get a full reticle 'picture.'

A pistol scope can be successfully mounted between the rear sight location and the front of the receiver with an XS LeverScout mount with three caveats.

1) The rear sight dovetail must be approx 4" from the front edge of the receiver, to secure the front end of the LeverScout base.

2) The top of the front receiver ring needs two 6-48 scope mount holes D/T'd inline with the bore to secure the rear of the LeverScout base.

3) The pistol scope you choose needs the correct eye relief window distance, for your eyes to get a full sight picture.

To expound upon (3): Unlike riflescopes, long eye relief (LER) pistol scopes have an optical "window", wherein the full field of view is visible.
If the user's eye falls outside of that window, less than an optimal sight pic occur, resulting in reduced speed of use and accuracy.

The eye relief specs are in each scope's tech data info - at least the ones made by reputable makers are.

The first pistol scope I tried had a sight window of 11"-21" - The 11" was too far from my eye, resulting in a mostly black sight picture with a small image in the middle. NOT GOOD !

The second scope's sight window was 9"-17" - Ta-Raaa ! A perfect sight picture resulted (for me), full & bright.

Evidently, the optimum distance, from my eye to a pistol scope mounted on my rifle is a little over 9". YMMV.

I've now used the combo successfully for about five years.

I would advise you to visit either a gun show or several gun shops, with your rifle in tow, and hold various pistol scopes in position over where the LeverScout mount would be, and see what eye relief window suits you, on that gun.

Qajaq59,

Redfield used to sell a nice mount and scope that fit where the rifle sight is. There was also a scope mount made that had a back up rear sight built in, I can't remember who made it, but it was one of the big companies. Both items are frequently seen on eBay.

The XS mount works well too, I have one on my Guide Gun.

You will need an intermediate eye relief scope, rather than a pistol scope. Some pistol scopes might have a short enough relief, but most do not. Try before you buy!
