Pit bull attack -- gun arrives almost too late

Not to confuse the issue, and I do agree that a dog that bites uprovoked needs to go down, but file this under an ounce of prevention being worth more than a pound of cure.

AKC dog shows encourage owners to show dogs as soon as possible. By showing a young pup as early as possible in a conformation show it is easily possible for a dog to be a champion at or before 12 months of age. The owner now begins to advertise their "champion" for breeding. A bitch can throw a litter and a dog can stud out lord knows how many litters. Then soemtime between 16 and 24 months the "champion" matures mentaly and becomes a horrible man biter. Now you have potentially dozens of litter thrown from a dog that can be horribly man aggressive.

And before someone says this is unlikely, this is exactly what happened to the Doberman Pinscher. Remember back in the '70's when they were the hysteria dog? All the myths about the pit bull were applied to the Doberman. The reason? Just before World War 2 the Marines selected the Doberman as their war dog. There was a very small breeding pool of Dobermans in the US and with the onset of World War 2 in Europe there was no chance to get more breeding stock from Germany. The existing dogs were bred as fast as possible in a loose breeding environment. The good dogs went to the Marines and the bad dogs were sold off. Back yard breeding programs went into operation and unstable dogs were allowed to breed. by the '70's there were very public maulings and the dogs had become popular with the fringe element. Reputable Doberman breeders cleaned house but the problem persisted and I recall people in the '80's still being prejudiced against the Dobermans. Bad breeding results in bad dogs. It is not a phenomenon related to just the pit bull.

Oh and for the record when I was 3 I was attacked without provocation by a Dalmatian. So, we need to euthanize all the Dalmatians. It's for the children.
