Just got an RCBS carbide die set for 45LC.

I've got other RCBS carbide die sets, but this one has a red plastic insert which is attached to, and surrounds the decapping rod.

I'm guessing its to help keep the rod "centered" although...I really can't see the total utility of it.

When did they go to that gizmo?

Can you post pics? I like my RCBS dies and have been thinking of buying a set to start loading for my Vaquero. Thanks!

I dunno, looks like its there for a purpose, and for the duration. I'd have to get physical with it to get it off methinks.

Interesting... I wouldn't think a plastic piece there would do anything but wear out rather quickly and cause problems. I would probably try to contact RCBS and ask them directly. And then I would probably get physical with it no matter what they said.

If it's used, somebody may have 3d printed something to try to solve an issue they were having. Just a thought.

This would be my guess.

I have received a "new" die set from a reputable vendor, not Natchez, that I'm sure was purchased before and returned to the vendor.

With my 45 Colt sizing die, I've found that it is easy to get the decapping pin out of line with the flash hole when adjusting it. Once properly located then locked in place, it stays. So, I could see a guy making a fix to center the decapping pin. After it did not work reliably, they sent the dies back.

But an e-mail to RCBS would solve the question for sure.

I leave the decap stem slightly loose. Carefully decap a casing and with the pin centered thru the flash hole, tighten the nut on top.

Ten minutes! I was on hold from Ft Lauderdale to Fort Pierce on I95.... Over an hour and a half. Jeeez.

The RCBS die sets have a label that must be cut to open the box. Its a "seal" of sorts, and damned hard to remove - as they want you to, in order to send the original UPC barcode for the rebate. Good luck getting the label off in on piece. So I think one would know if these were "opened". They were not.

I can't see any real significance between the 45LC and the 44Spl/Mag die set, as far as centering goes. For that matter, rifle die sets should be hardest to center - as the stems are longer and subject to additional forces (neck expanding). I dunno.

I'll try RCBS again in the AM PDT, see what they have to say

Sent pics to RCBS. They still haven't answered email from weeks ago.... But we'll see how it goes.

(Edit-in)
First email sent about my Summit press 21 days ago today. No response.

Did manage to speak to CS today. The guy asked "you're saying you found plastic in our dies?" Yup, I'm saying I found plastic. Then I described it. He was clueless, went into the "deal with a complaint mode". I wasn't complaining, just inquisitive.

He thought used or counterfeit. I highly doubt both. He wanted pics. He got pics.

I love a good mystery, as well as conspiracy theories. And let's not forget zombies!o_O

But I highly doubt the die is counterfeit. Too many expenses for that to be even remotely plausible. Molding a case, purchasing and machining steel, etc.... And then being able to sell enough of them to reputable distributors, not going to happen in my opinion.

I think your die was "Bubba'd" and returned. And then the seal on the box was probably replaced. I've seen it done with common cleaners that my company sold. The product would arrive with damaged labels, we would get new labels from the vendor, and the product would end up on the shelf and get sold. Business as usual.

I'm curious to hear the outcome of this and hope you keep us posted. I certainly don't want a die like that for my Vaquero.

Screw the dying to your press screw the de capping Rod into it upside down if it will go and just pull off the plastic with a pair of pliers

Could be an assembly guide or some such that was supposed to be removed at the factory. Just a SWAG.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Maybe it's the fixture that's used to tighten the pin retainer
