Been reading up a little lately on homeland defense rifles. Please give some input if you know, comparing/contrasting just these 3 rifles - any and all charactistics included. What they have in common is .223, accept AR mags, and gas-driven op rods rather than the direct impingement of an AR.. But what are the differences/advantages/disadvantages? Thanks.

Much was written about the M96 on TFL, some of it by me.

For example,

Summary: my M96 (the rifle, not carbine) was about as accurate as your average AR. It was easier to clean the barrel because it was removable in about 5 seconds. It was heavy. The trigger pull was poor. It was easy to shoot rapid fire. The gas system got dirty, and my two-piece gas piston eventually came apart. It's harder to get parts for than a AR15. It's expensive.

It was eventually the last two points that caused me to trade it in on a Rock River.. which has been just as reliable as my M96 was, is more accurate and has a better trigger pull.

YMMV.

I have an M96 in my possession right now. (long story, it isn't mine, and I only have it for a few weeks) However I have got to put several hundred rounds through it so far, and I will get to use it in a 3 gun match this Saturday.

I am very impressed with this gun so far. Reliability (after I adjusted the gas) has been excellent. Accuracy was better than I expected. The M96 has a quick detach barrel, and I kind of suspected that it was going to have a bad effect on accuracy, however that doesn't seem to be the case. Getting the sights adjusted produced 1 hole groups at 25 yards, and under 3 inch groups at 100. (which ain't bad considering iron sights, and I'm not by nature a good group shooter).

It points well, recoil is mild, and my split times so far have been very good. I'm looking forward to trying this gun out on the clock in a match setting.

Field stripping is a little weird, as you have to push in a little button thingy on the bolt carrier to get it to unlock from the charging handle. Other than that it strips kind of like an AR only it is easier to clean because 1. You can take off the barrel and clean the chamber directly. 2. It doesn't seem to put much carbon into the barrel due to the gas system.

So far I really like the M96.

My experience with the other 2 rifles is rather limited, as I've only played around with them a little bit and have never really wrung one out.

I own an AR180B, and I like it VERY much - lightweight, quick-handling, and I've been able to make a 6" steel plate dance at about 175yds with it. With good mags/ammo, my rifle has been very reliable, and I've installed a Rock River Arms NM trigger set that yields a VERY nice 3.75# trigger pull. Best of all - cleaning is WAY easier than with an AR15.

I've shot an M96, and it was VERY accurate and soft-shooting. I just couldn't justify the high price tag, and the weight(around 9 lbs - a rifle that weighs that much oughta be firing .308 :D ).

The Daewoos I've handled were also nice, but you're pretty much limited to the used/pre-ban market with them - I also couldn't hang with the safety lever, which requires a 180-degree throw in the opposite direction from an AR-pattern lever. But, if you can find a good price on one, jump on it - the guys I've known who've bought Daewoos have been VERY satisfied with their accuracy and reliability.

I have the pre-ban Daewoo and I love it!! Its very accurate and I'm yet to experience any malfunction (I have close to 3K through it now). The only downside is, as mentioned above, parts availability and its somewhat harder to scope than the AR.
