Please help, I need some gun stats....stat!

Next time, just say "Really? How interesting. Show me the study." As often as necessary. (don't yell "oh yeah?!? well, prove it!!... that's counter-productive).

Oh, and as others have mentioned - do try to break up long posts a bit. It's very hard for some of us (especially those of us with old eyes or small monitors or both) to read extremely long paragraphs.

I believe that actual stats are households that have firearm are more likely to have firearm "accident". Which is logical, hard to get in a car accident if you don't have a car and don't ride in one.

To find any honest stats on this topic is near impossible. AFAIK no one really collects data on it without an agenda to start with.

Yes, antis love to use statistics, often made up on the spot.

In this case, I would say that your sister is genuinely concerned about your level of responsibility, personal maturity, and the safety of those around you.

You've already shown her that you are irresponsible with an edged tool (which I'm not quite sure why it was needed to search for a lost cat.) Your actions were incautious enough so that her child could have been badly cut. She likely does not feel that you would be any more responsible with a firearm.

I do apologize for the lack of spaces in between paragraphs, I honestly blame the Windsor County School systems, school for me was one community project after another, Building Bridges with the Army Corps of Engineers, Highway Clean-up, stacking wood for the elderly, Etc.......Not too much academia at all from 4th grade on up.

As for looking for the cat with a machete, a machete is a tool used to hack down thick vegetation to help clear a path, I live in VT, I'd like to see anyone of you negotiate the terrain I was without one.

Myles, You sound ignorant, my niece was in no danger whatsoever, why I feel the need to explain myself I'm not sure, but the machete was sheathed as my pistol was holstered. that is something you could not have known from reading my OP, but u presume to know enough about this particular situation to deem me irresponsible with a firearm and an edged weapon.

Other posters were able to use common sense to understand my poorly punctuated thread and contribute useful information, you however post useless information about insignificant details that I didn't elaborate on because they didn't have much to do with anything. I have no sense of humor when it comes to safety and would never endanger anyone, much less a member of my own family. See how your ignorance effects others? BTW, was that better, as far as punctuation and line breaks?

statistics show that a greater percentage of people who own guns for self defense/home defense end up having their gun taken from them and used on them".

You take 10 people with CCW

All 10 are mugged

6 of the 10 are killed with their own gun

Ah yes, I can see her logic.

Not really :p

I hate to say it, but fighting with her by trying to spew off more statistics is probably not the way to win the fight. Her problem (as is most people's) is fear. Statistics and arguments don't dispel fear.

Being an understanding and polite, yet confident gun owner will. Offer to take her shooting.

I guess these erroneous stats help us in some ways, in the sense that if somebody is stupid enough to believe a dicked up stat like: "it is more often the person using the gun in self defense has their gun taken from them and used on them", than the person really has no business owning or carrying guns in the first place.

But then again, I wonder how many voters actually believe this ridiculous nonsense, anyway point being, I guess it doesn't really matter what people like my cousin think, I just can't stand people who think they know everything.

It all comes down to responsible, competent gun ownership, as we will not contribute to these stats, but the people who do make the rest of us look bad.

There have been some shootings in this area lately and its aggravating because this is a nice place, but drug dealers and all of these other idiots keep moving in from the city and shooting at people, so it just draws negative attention.

BTW, just to clear things up with the cat, although I don't know why it was of such great concern to people, I was only doing it to make my mom happy because she loved the cat. I explained that the cats survival instincts that carried her 12yrs as an outdoor cat, wouldn't have if she was able to get lost within walking and calling distance, but sometimes you gotta make mom happy and it only took a little bit of my time.
That's just for the folks worried about why I was looking for a cat

Well, since you asked...

<note the blank line>

ps... I fixed up a bunch of stuff, but really, it's just the big mass of text that makes it hard. If you're not sure where a paragraph should start, fine.... just every now and then throw in a blank line lol. It breaks up the post visually and makes it easier to read.

My "fix" is probably full of new errors :)

As for the CDC, they have been so tight with the medical community for so long, it is questionable how objective their opinions are when it relates to guns.
Good luck!

This is absolutely true! I have actually started leaving my HD gun outside for the BGs to find, that way I can take the gun away and use it against them.

Why is it that BGs don't ever seem to have problems with their guns being taken and used against them?

"...I didn't have any solid facts or stats to back up my argument, but I know for an absolute fact that she is dead wrong..."

I'm sure she feels exactly the same way. If there's nothing she could possibly say to change your mind, what do you think you could say to change hers?

Say What?

Sorry to break it to you, she is not dead wrong. She is 100% correct, but what she is arguing really has nothing to do with whether someone should or should not own guns.

Your assertion is in error.

There is no body of data that supports the "take away your gun and shoot you with it" argument.

You are welcome to present such data if you have it.

Otherwise, please know that beginning your dissertation with that assertion renders the rest of your premise that much less credible.

Sorry, but you are getting into a rhetorical debate, your cousin isn't going to
A) let you win a fight, *(sounds like there is some history there)
B) change her stance one bit

no matter how well you fight, er 'discuss'
getting into it with her does nothing, rather ask her what she expects to do against a rapist, burglar, or other sort of 'boogy' man bad guy, ask her how she expects to fight, get her to admit that she is willing to give sex when demanded rather than fight, if she says that she is going to fight, then ask her why she wants to argue with you about the most effective tool.

thearmedcitizen.com/

this might help, telling her she is wrong will get you no where.

OK...ummm...well what she is trying to say is...........umm...yeah..ok...there's just no way in hell...ahh nevermind, I guess ill just keep an unloaded gun next to my bed as a decoy so when I pull it out and it gets taken from me, thats when ill pull the loaded J-frame out of my pocket. Sound good?

Gunfacts !!!!

Give her a copy of gun-facts and ask her to move to Mass. Love the gun facts and keep a copy on my coffee table. You would not believe how much enjoyment that thing has brought me.
I showed my sister in law an article in the local paper 3 days ago that stated the new FBI gun violence stats....all time low for the past 30 years, she said it couldn't be correct or a very pro gun writer. Know what I told her....move to Mass. LOL

So who do you think she was referring to when she so flippantly stated that "it couldn't be correct or A VERY PRO GUN WRITER"? Was she saying that someone with the FBI was skewing the numbers because they were very pro gun, or was she accusing the reporter who published the numbers of being a lier?

I would love nothing more than to throw her words back in her face, as she is a very pompous, self proclaimed intellectual, know it all, who could stand to be taken down a peg or two from her ignorant, paranoid, redneck, gun-toting cousin.

Hey dude just because you're a gun toting redneck it doesn't mean you're ignorant. From the sounds of it she is the one who is ignorant.

Somebody once said (I think it was Mark Twain) "There are lies, damned lies, then there are statistics."

One of my favorite quotes of all time and I used to think it was Mark Twain too. My "research" has lead me to conclude that it is most properly attributed to Benjamin Disraeli, though many internet sources do state Twain.
