bold type added by me for emphasis

So it would appear that the flat latch IS correct for this model.

As the original pre-model 36 Chief's Special was originally made with the standard thumb piece, but was quickly chamged to a flat latch and remained that way until 1966. 1966 is also the year listed as when the latch was changed on the Model 30.

So it would appear that the early ones had standard thumb pieces, then were changed to flat and remained that way until after they started stamping model numbers on the frame.

"Post the serial number (with two "xx" in place of the last numbers) that is located on the butt, back of the cylinder, and bottom of the barrel, and I can find the approximate date it was shipped."

It is 116,xxx.

Thanks BluesBear...

So, are we 100% sure that is what I have? I am not doubting ANYONE.... I just want to be sure I am correct prior to letting the lady know what she has. I will probably see if she wants to cough up the $30 for an "official" letter.....

Personally, viewing the posts here on THR is more exciting if you ask me!

outfieldjack, what she has is a .32 Hand Ejector/pre Model 30.

Since it doesn't have a model number stamped in the frame it is 1957 or earlier. Serial number 536685 was 1946 - number 712953 was 1960. Round butt didn't start until 1948. So it has to be between 1948 & 1957.
Your serial number of 613989 would indicate early-mid 1950s.

If I were y'all I'd spring for the $30 ketter. The Letter will tell you the exact day it was shipped from the factory and to which dealer or distributor it was shipped. Plus it increases the value of the gun.

:D

Not that she'd want to sell it. That's a keeper.

Is it safe?

To shoot this gun? I bought some 32 S&W LONG 98 grain lead wadcutters today and was thinking about trying the gun out. Do ya'll think it would be ok to shoot it or not?

Took it to the range....

And it shot very well. NO recoil at all (it's just a .32 though) and it cleand up pretty nice too. guy behind the counter could not tell me what model it was though.
