I set out to find a deer hunting rifle for my 16 year old son and stumbled upon the CDNN deal. I thought, here's a chance to spend a little more than I planned and get a rifle he (or I) could hunt with and double as the tacticool long range bench rest/zombie killer I always thought I needed.

The gun will be used more often at the range but its most important function is a hunting rifle. IOW, I understand there are tradeoffs ergo I can't see buying a 20x fixed power scope when I need the FOV of a 3x9, etc.

I plan on getting the $99 Hogue pillar bedded stock from CDNN when they become available.

From research it appears the Mueller TAC ll fills the hunt first- long range target second-requirement in my price range. SWFA has the Bushnell 4200 3x9x40 for the same price though. Any help deciding there would be appreciated. I could use a suggestion on rings too. It came with a Near 20moa rail on it. Forgive my ignorance but other than a place to mount the scope, what exactly does this thing do and how is it different from any other base?

Also, I'd like a bipod, which I would only use when I'm not hunting with it. Probably almost exclusivively while seated rather than prone. Should I go with swivel vs. non swivel and 6-9 or 9-13?

I'm looking to pick up some of the PRVI match ammo. Any suggestion on the 175 vs. the 168 BTHP? I guess the answer is probaly buy some of both and see which one it likes better.

And finally, any suggestions on a good, hopefully oversized sling? I'm pretty long in the flank and wear a size 50 suit jacket. I can't seem to find one that doesn't run out of adjustment.

A bit of background- where I hunt there's opportunity for ~500 yard shots that I'd have to be a hell of a lot better shot than I am now to take. The longest shot/kill I've ever had was right at 150 with the vast majority at 75 yards and in.

Right now I have facilities to target shoot out to about 250 but could see joining a local club that has a 600 yard range.

I would like to keep the cost of the scope/rings/bipod/sling around $400.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading my long azz post and thanks in advance for any help.

I'm curious also... I'm waiting on the stock too...CDNN now says last week of September.....that is only a week away....

and I've been looking at scopes... too many to choose from....

What are you other guys choosing? My long shot would would be 300 yards..... mostly gonna kill paper, hogs, and deer and shorter ranges....
