Please suggest a better tool re: crimped primers

What caliber are you loading??

Your tool comes with both LG and SM primer pocket reamers.

If you have the SM in place while reaming LG pockets, it won't work.

Assuming you are using the correct reamer?
If you could post a photo of one of your reamed primer pockets, we could better tell you what is going wrong.

I use the RCBS Primer Pocket Swager kit. Press mounted and doesn't remove any metal from the primer pocket. Consistent results and easy to use!

Trying to do .223 so small reamer. Really having to honk on the case with it to get it open enough to get a primer in. Same issue with a Hornady hand primer and now also using the setup on my LCT. Just seems like it isn't taking enough off. Left to right 2 cases dented primer, two cases not seated enough, then one that has been cut with the tool and the last untouched case.

I use a Dillon 600 Super Swage. I normally run about 200 or more .223 military/police crimped cases a week and this tool makes the job a lot easier than other methods I've tried over the past 20+ years. It will also remove crimps from .308 and .30-06 by changing the crimp remover and shell holder. I've seen a couple on e-Bay but they end up going for about what you can buy one new. Here's a link to a youtube video of how one works:

After years of of trying all the short cuts (cheap) fixes for removing military primer crimps on 5.56 brass I plunked down $106 and got a Dillon Super Swage. Works like it said it should. Life is to short to waste time trying to save a few bucks. Get the swage you will not regret it.

yeah i seem to remember when i reamed them out, the cut had to end about half way down into the primer pocket. looks like your about 1/4-1/3 in

one of the reasons for the swager- for fear of prematurely loose primer pockets

Thank you, I looked at what SCC linked to also. The words "lightly polish the bottom of the primer pocket" have me headed in the right direction I believe. I've just been overly cautious it seems.

I clearly need something better than this hand tool though. Not surprised at the number of suggestions for the Dillon swager either.

I use a ch4d pocket swager. It works at about 4-5 seconds per piece of brass. Just a hair slower than the dillon, and roughly 1/2 the cost. the dillon works extremely well as well. I cant think of anything blue that doesn't work pretty well.

I've been using an RCBS Primer Pocket Swaging Tool 2 #9481 on crimped pockets with ease on my Rockchucker press. Can be had for 30 bucks or even less with some shopping. Does large and small pockets.

This one:

or perhaps better this one

I have been using the Hornady by just bought the RCBS as it is self limiting (the flat part)
I have both of those, and prefer the RCBS. The Hornady can cut into the sides of the primer pocket if not used very carefully. I dulled the edges on the part that would do that on mine, but now I just use the RCBS tool since buying it.

I've used the Lyman hand tool. Yes, doing over a couple hundred leaves you with sore fingers. If I find myself needing to do more I'll be investing in the swage tool form CH4D.

I have used a torx bit, size T-27 I think, to ream some .223 I had. It worked in a pinch but I ordered the correct reamer but haven't used it yet.
