Gunnies and Discount Guns and Ammo

I live in Orem, UT and there are 2 really good LGS within short driving distance.

First, Gunnies in Orem:
Pros: Spring to fall they have bi-monthly range nights where you can sign up and shoot their range guns just for the price of ammo (which is very reasonable). No cost to enter the range, even. Dozens of guns to choose from. My wife and I had a really fun date for the cost of 2 boxes of 9mm ($20).

Gunnies will match any local dealer's pricing, and Impact Guns is considered local.

Gunnies donated $10k+ for improvements to the Provo gun range (benches, roofs, etc.).

Cons: A few of their salesdroids are complete retreads, but most of them are really good.

Last I heard they were charging $50 for FFL transfer. Kinda steep.

Discount Guns and Ammo in Provo
Smaller, but great people and good prices. Never been helped by an idiot there. Lots of tacticool stuff.

Smaller selection and their range and rentals are expensive.

You might be familiar with the largest gun store (by far) I've ever seen?
Whitaker's is about 30 min. east/southeast of Henderson KY.

My brother in Evansville IN can drive there in less than an hour.

I don't post on THR much, but I lurk here quite often. My favorite LGS is:

On Target Shooting Sports
590 Vance Rd. Suite 109
Valley Park MO, 63088
(636)861-1055

May not be the cheapest place around, but certainly not the highest either. Usually have a decent selection to pick through. The staff are the best though, usually very helpful, knowledgeable, and kind to the beginner folks, which is definitely a plus in my book. They also have a 15 lane indoor range there, which is well maintained, with good ventilation, and no outrageous rules. They also offer various classes, such as CCW.

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT WORK FOR, OWN, OR AM IN ANY WAY AFFILIATED WITH ON TARGET, I SIMPLY SHOP THERE OFTEN, AND HAVE HAD GREAT EXPERIENCES. I RECEIVE NOTHING FOR POSTING THIS HERE.

Sporting Arms, Winterville, GA

Sporting Arms in Winterville, GA (near Athens, 60 miles east of Atlanta, GA). Jerry Erwin and his wife Lisa run the place. No BS, just good honest talk. He'll get what you need if he doesn't have it. Excellent reloading dept, fair prices on ammo, fair prices on guns - new and used, $10 FFL transfers. Not the biggest shop in town, but certainly the most knowledgeable (without being a know-it-all).

He doesn't advertise (and doesn't need to) and there is no sign for his shop which is in a building behind his house. You just have to know where to turn in Winterville at the big metal bird on Parkview.

Tell him Eric from the bank sent you. (706) 742-7971

The Gun Broker, Clackamas, Tigard and Woodburn (never been to that one though), Oregon.
They have a very large selection of used guns and a one month no-questions-asked buyback policy of 80% or something on any used gun that they sell you. Most any gun store that I've been to (personal observation) will buy your used gun back if you don't like it but'll pay you about 1/3 of what you just paid for it.

Northwest Armory, over around Milwaukie Oregon has a very small selection of used guns..

Both places are good gun stores. I miss Three Bears.

ArmsMart, in Independence, MO, about a mile and a half from the Lake City plant.
Great ammo selection and prices, lots of optics including Leupold, ACOG, Aimpoints, etc.
Tons of holsters, rings, bases, magazines, bipods, etc.

Great guys, great gunsmith in house, too.

But they won't come close to Bud's pricing on new guns. Nobody around here does.
There are deals to be had on used guns, sometimes.
Other times I can buy new from Bud's for the price of a used one there.

www.marksoutdoors.com

Located in the Birmingham AL area has a really good selection and generally knowledgeable staff. Pricing on guns, ammo, safes and just about all supplies is reasonable. Plenty of new and used rifles and pistols as well as archery and fishing equipment. All around it is my favorite even though it is not necessarily "local" to me. I go there every time I go to B'ham and usually leave some money with them. They have an in-house credit card that offers zero interest deals a couple of times a year.

So I just mentioned Sporting Arms in post #55 above. Just a moment ago, Lisa comes to the bank to make a deposit for her store and she hand delivers a set of scope bases for my Anschutz 54-M Sporter. I asked them a week or so ago if they could get them and the did. They came in yesterday and she hand delivers them today. They are the best LGS on the planet!!

H & H Shooting Sports Complex in Oklahoma City, OK. is my favorite here in OKC. It's located at 400 S Vermont Ave., Suite 110. It's parallel to and visible from I 40 between the I-44 Interchange and the Meridian Avenue exit, on the north side of I 40.

There are about 30 or so lanes and they are building more. There are archery lanes and air gun lanes as well. The selection of rental firearms is extensive, and includes full auto.

The stock of firearms is vast. They also carry reloading equipment and supplies, ammo, archery equipment and accessories, gun safes, holsters, gunsmiths on staff, CCW classes, firearms related clothing, etc., etc.

If you go there, grab one of the best onion burgers around at the 4U Café inside.

H & H also hosts the politically active "High Noon Club" that meets every Friday at noon, it's free, all are welcome, and several state reps, senators, and other local elected officials often attend.

There are several other good gun shops around, but none as full service as H & H.

Bump cause Larry was kind enough to change the title to something more appropriate.

In the St. Louis area

Graf's Reloading
923 S 5th St.
Saint Charles, MO 63301
636-946-7468

Huge selection of reloading gear along with a friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff. The selection of guns is usually somewhat slim, though.

Smitty's Sporting Goods
13220 Timberwood Lane
De Soto, MO 63020
636-586-5839

One of the largest collections of new firearms that I have every seen, ranging from small carry pistols to expensive double guns. Staff is willing to spend an hour on a customer to make sure he or she gets something that suits needs. I've bought a bolt action and an over under from here, and I couldn't be more pleased.

I've bought several guns from Jensen Arms in Loveland CO. Great shop they have a big selection and a wide variety of ammo (lots of surplus too), they do supressors if you're into that sort of thing. Be aware: the shop price and the price you see as 'buy it' on Gunbroker might not match. Tell them/bring them the gunbroker price they listed and you'll get the better deal.

The Firing Line in Aurora CO has a large selection of used and new guns, and I've found some bargains there before. Also they have an indoor range, gunsmith and lots of reloading supplies.

I wouldn't say they're necessarily my favorite, but Surplus Arms & Ammo off I-5 exit 124, hiding behind Tactical Taylor and sharing a parking lot with them, has pretty competitive prices on bulk ammo. Generally once you factor in shipping they're selling for the same price as most online ammo sites. WA does all they can to encourage us to buy online by marking up everything 9.3%*, but the store still manages to stay competitive. The places seems to be doing a booming business, they're always crowded, and recently changed their hours to 10:00 - 18:00 7 days a week. They've got good prices on P-Mags too.

*(If you're in the Army I can't in good faith encourage you to buy any firearm at a LGS off post. Buy online and transfer through the place on post, otherwise you'll get nailed for a 9.3% usage tax. This goes for online purchases as well, you will get slammed for 9.3% regardless of whether you buy from the LGS off post or transfer an online purchase through them. Obviously 9.3% is a pretty hefty markup on an item that might be hundreds if not thousands of dollars.)

I'll second CertainDef's nod to The Gun Broker (all 3 locations-- Tigard, Clackamas, Woodburn).

The Tigard location seems to have the largest total inventory of the 3 locations, if you count accessories of various sorts, gun cleaning gear, Snap Caps, etc. Tigard and Clackamas seem to have comparable numbers of pistols on the wall, amounting to a pretty good collection. I have seen some noteworthy stuff at Clackamas. H&K P7, and the original poly pistol, also made by H&K.

The Woodburn location has a much smaller inventory, but they occasionally hit a home run. I got my Walther PPQ there, and it was the only place that I'd been able to find one, at that time.

Management appears static at each location, but they seem to share some of the employees. There are at least 3 guys working for them who are not just knowledgeable or friendly... they are truly passionate. They make great recommendations, and often know what they are talking about. When they don't, these guys have been honest about it. I appreciate their service.

As far as the used inventory at NW armory goes-- CertainDeaf is correct. Their used pistol inventory is pretty minimal. They do get some gems, though. Last time I was in there, they had an EAA Witness Carry P 9mm in the used area for $389. I have also seen a Walther PPS in their used area. These things tend to fly out, though. They get a lot of traffic. I've been in there at 11am on a weekday, and seen 30+ people wandering around, with a handful of people waiting for background checks to process.

I feel lucky to live in this area. Great carry laws, and between NW Armory and the 3 Gun Broker locations, we have at least 4 great options for local shops.

I haven't been to Keith's over in Gresham for so long I couldn't really make a comment about it. I'd like to know though..

Friday I was in a shop up in Taft Ca, Ten Percent Firearms. Not local to me by any means, but I get by there every month or so on business. It is, to my knowlege the only LGS around of that seems to be owned (not sure) and operated by women. Heck, they even sell Mary Kay cosmetics.

Now one might think this is a strange combination, but the ladies there know there stuff, and are a delight to deal with. And like any good LGS, they have the regular old farts that come around.

So, if you're ever out that way, stop by.

don't have any favorites and wouldn't recommend any of the lgs's in my area.
i use gunbroker and pawnshops for all of my rifles and pawnshops for my transfers.
i don't buy generic remchesters i try to buy all my ammo on line.
i do know of one gunshop on the south side of houston that has a handguns for lapdances program

K&R Distributors, 4 Bashford Street, Yonkers, NY
Owner is a Yonkers cop and a great guy.
Very friendly and knowledgeable, with reasonable prices on firearms, accessories and ammo.
$25 per gun transfers, and frequently just waives the fee if you're a longtime customer.
Inexpensive ammo ($25 for 100 rounds of 9mm or .38spl factory), too.
Barely marks up used guns - he bought a Mossberg 500 for $175 and sold it to me for $200.

Certaindeaf,

I haven't been out to Keith's. I rarely make it out to Gresham. I was told today that Brightwater Ventures in Vancouver, WA has Caracal pistols in stock. I drove all the way up there to see, only to find out that they're closed today.
