Well I have a thing for AKs and I really do think the VEPR is one of the best iterations on the market. Well I picked up another one at Knob Creek, this time in .308 and decided to build it into a bit of a poor man's designated marksman rifle.

Basically I was looking for something to look cool and be able to shoot reasonably accurate out to a few hundred yards. This is not meant to be a MOA bench rest grouping gun, just a fun mid range plinker/Minute of Badguy kind of thing.

Anyway here she is as she stands right now. What do you think?

I haven't had a chance to officially sight it in, just sort of tinker with it at 50 yards testing for function. At 50 yards I could put surplus ammo through the same hole.

I hope to get out to 100-200 next friday. Like I said if it is on center torso at 200 or so yards I am happy as it's a fun gun.

I have my Savage set up as my teach me to really shoot scoped rifles gun.

Make sure you know your gun and scope so you can range and fire quickly. A good shooter behind a 2-3 moa gun can sure be a marksman. Get a rear-mounted peep sight so you can shoot quick even with the scope out of commission for any reason. I kinda hate the notch and post, and not just on AKs, either.

Were I being picky I'd mention that wood can change based on atmospheric conditions (humidity) and that the bipod is mount to, essentially, the barrel. Be a little careful to shoot it (pull down on stock, push into bipod) exactly the same way every time. Even with my floated, bolt-rifle (PSS) I can easily screw up the way the gun recoils and throw the shot off.

Oh, and it sure looks cool.

Hmmm, looks like if the kids in "Red Dawn" had one of those, the movie would've been shorter.

(That's a compliment. )

I've had a hankerin to do the same thing with my FAL, just need to get a proper scope. What kind of scope is that, anyway?

From the looks of it the wood on that could be refinished into something REALLY pretty. Not that its ugly now or anything. It's actually a very cool looking rifle.

Install a Red Star Arms adjustable trigger group, switch to the PSOP 8x42 scope, use match ammo and you just might be surprised at the accuracy....

Great looking rifle. Knob Creek rocks!

I took some friends down, and some of them made their first-ever gun purchases there. For the 8 of us who went, we came home with a dozen guns, about 10,000 rounds of ammo, and accesorries out the yin-yang!

Like kids in a giant candy store....

very nice, definitely something I wouldn't mind having in the collection.

I'm very interested where that furniture came from. The only stuff I've seen for Saigas is synthetic, and that's good and all, but... man, that's a great looking gun ya got there. :)

The furniture is kind of odd. The rear thumhole stock is different then all the other VEPRs I have seen. It is more like the thumbhole on the Super VEPR then what I remember of the early standard VEPRs.

At any rate I really like the look and most of all it is a very comfortable feel.

The POSP 8x42 arrived, resulting in this take on the budget DMR concept:

The rubber eyepiece is totally worthless while wearing glasses...it's only on for photo purposes.

Might anyone suggest a non barrel-clamp bipod which would work with this rifle?

Flying V: Your best bet might be to install a sling swivel on the foreend and get a Harris Bipod.

Are those PSOP scopes offset to the left, to the point where you can't use them firing from the left shoudler? Enquiring lefties want to know, guys!

Just tried it left-handed. The scope is sufficiently offset that the rifle must be canted to bring the eye in line with the scope. I am not a real lefty, and holding the gun that way felt as odd as putting my shoes on the wrong feet, so take this for what it's worth.

Aww...man, that's tough. I was really hoping to eventually get a VEPR and put one of those cool PSOP scopes on there. But, it's probably offset too far to fire from the left shoulder. Being left handed and left-eye dominant, left handed shooting is obviously very important to me.
