I've got a 915, which is a plain-jane version with a blued slide and aluminum frame (same internals as the 59xx).

Judging from reputation and the one I own, this is a fair deal. There was nothing 'wrong' with these guns, it was a very good design and I like them. I also own Beretta, Sig and CZ, and the S&W is comparable in terms of quality and function.
A stainless model will be heavy, but consider what you'd normally pay, even used, for a full stainless from one of those other brands. That's a solid price.

Stopped by today to look them over again. All of the stainless pistols have that wrap around plastic grip. Now they have 2 in the case marked Durham NC but they are both M&P-45s. I was mistaken on that. Those are going for $329.00.

My nicely polished 5906 is my church carry. Heavy? Yes , but mass only lasts an hour. I don't jog with it. Why do I choose that particular firearm? Well , I wanted high capacity , I have never , EVER come across a more reliable semi-auto pistol.

A while back a friend gave some of his reloads to try ; he thought they were loaded light. Shooting was like a slow motion movie , the action sounded like a series of separate metallic sounds ; the report and recoil quite soft. Eventually we ran the ammo through a chrono , some were down in the low 400's and the pistol still managed to cycle. That made me a believer.

Great trigger? Not really. Fine looking mass of stainless steel which will NOT let you down? Absolutely.

My brother had a SIG P228 that was like that: it would feed and cycle anything that you could fit into the magazine. It was my test-bed gun for all of my hand loads.

The S&W 3rd Gen guns are famous for cycling empty casings from the magazine if you work the slide by hand. Ive tried it with my 645, works just fine.

Just about everyone should have at least one good quality 9 M/M. If you haven't by now go get one. Good Luck, and keep us posted.

I've got my eye on a police trade in Sig P226 in .40 that's going for around $480. No way I can afford a new one right now, and I hope this is a good choice.

I walked into GT Distributors about a month ago. I bought a glock gen 4 22 for $309. with 3 mags & a Sig 226 in .40 with 3 mags, night sights & the wrap around grip for $289. with the box. For le pistols they were almost in new condition. I would take the glock over the sig all day long for 2 reasons. Weight & that d/a to s/a trigger.

That is a hell of a good deal! Would 480 definitely be way too high? This is from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore. I'm based just outside of Denver and not sure if any of the local stores carry LEO trade ins.

I am actually looking for a DA/SA, the P229 is probably smaller but I'm interested in a pistol with a de-cocker for carry. I'm building up my collection after living in a very anti gun country for the past 19yrs so I'm grateful for any guidance.

Go online & look for leo trade in's. A lot of depts. are going to the 9mm so there are tons of .40's out there. Give GT Distributors a chance. I would call them tomorrow.

Another one to look at is JG ammo. They get quite a few of the LEO trade ins too and will give you a good idea as to where the prices should be. Buds gets them as well, but Buds leaves really old pricing up so it’s not as easy to judge current market. I have seen deals from JG that were almost too good to pass up, and I have bought ammo from them.

Much appreciated I've been away so long I don't know what a good deal looks like anymore

Thank you! I think I have that bookmarked. Much appreciated.

Good luck. I went to GT's website & they have the 226 DAK, which looks like da only (didn't see a hammer or decocker). Give them a call tomorrow. If they don't have what you are looking for they might be able to call you when they get another batch in. There are others that sell these pistols too for cheap.

In 1996 I went into a shop that was filled with dirt cheap police trade in s&w model 10s that they couldn’t seem give away. The haunts me because I regret not grabbing every one of them.

Local gun store had Georgia Department of Corrections S&W M64 revolvers for sale at $279. These are mid 1980's 38 Special revolvers, and that was too good of a deal to walk away from. These revolvers had been shot very little, mostly dumped into things, so they had scratches. Of course the store employees had purchased the like new ones :cuss:well before I arrived on the scene. Such is life.

Look, go through the pile, find something that is tight, good trigger, lots of finish left, and save some money.

Sometimes you find interesting firearms:

I must have a dozen police trade-in handguns by now. One was functional, but needed a little bit of gunsmithing. The rest have all been mechanically sound, and typically not shot much. I like GT Distributors also. Gulf State Distributors is another possibility. I got a police trade-in 38 caliber snubby from them just this week. I don't recall what my FiL paid for his PTI Glock 22, but I liked it so much that I decided to get one for myself. Mine was $280 with the box and two magazines. It has some holster wear, but doesn't seem to have been shot much.

Police trade in guns can be some of the best deals you can find. Most police officers are not gun guys and shooters. Most of them only fire their duty gun once or twice a year when they are required to fire Post qualification. Most Post courses are only 60 rounds so, some of these guns are only fired 60 to 120 rounds a year.
So even tho a gun may show holster wear, it may not have been fired much. Good luck on finding a sweet one.

I'm starting to think that the price I saw for that Sig P226 is a little high now! I don't mind holster wear at all, I like the idea that the pistol has some history to it. I saw a video from classic arms that showed a bunch of M&P 40s with police crests on them which I think is pretty cool.
