Cop's wife shot dead while trying to help him

April 21 2003 at 06:33AM

A brave wife of a local police officer was shot dead while attempting to help her husband stop an armed robbery at a petrol station, police said on Sunday.

Superintendent Eddie Watson said the incident in Convent Lane, East London, happened on Thursday night. Quincy Tohose, 34, wife of dog unit member Inspector Thomas Tohose, was shot in the chest at about 10pm.

She was pronounced dead on arrival at St Dominics Hospital in East London. Tohose and his wife were driving in Buffalo Road in their private vehicle when they spotted an armed robbery in progress on the forecourt of a service station.

"Three armed men were in the process of robbing two woman at gunpoint. The men grabbed their handbags and fled on foot into Stephenson Street," Watson said.

'He found his wife lying in a pool of blood'
Tohose, who was off duty, gave chase in his vehicle. During the chase his wife jumped from the vehicle and followed the suspects on foot into Convent Lane.

Watson said Tohose made a u-turn and stopped the vehicle and was about to join his wife in the chase when he heard a gun shot.

"He found his wife lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to the chest," Watson said.

Tohose was admitted to St Marks Clinic where he was treated for shock and discharged. There have been no arrests and police are investigating a case of murder and armed robbery.

Sorry man - I know what you mean, but regardless of the circumstances, nothing could be worse than having your wife gunned down when you stop to help someone.

I completely agree Pendragon... I just was taking a swipe at the system in England that I theorize allowed this to happen. It was a backwards warnig to the chior (us) not to let it happen here.

What kind of idiot would let his wife.....

chase an armed criminal????? Firearm deaths would be much less if it weren't for stupid people........chris3

Unless you have an 'S' on your T-shirt ... you don't chase three armed bad guys down a street, especially at night!

I'm afraid it's another example of Darwin's Law at work.

Maybe we can ship Sarah Brady over there? Ummmmm ....

To answer the above question: no, unless his wife was also an officer, she would never have been given a permit to even own (much less, carry) a gun.

A while back Britain took away the guns by saying that all citizens must go to the local authorities and provide a reason why they need a gun before a permit to own could be issued. At the same time, they informed the issuing authorities that no reason would be considered sufficient to allow any private citizen to own a gun. case closed.

I feel sorry for the officer and his family. In hind sight I am sure he wishs that he had driven past and ignored it.
For some reason his wife was willing to get involved. If more people were willing to get involved this would be a better world. BUT at least in USA it would be a poor choice for LEGAL reasons. Was she armed? Was the INTENT that she follow from distance? I don't know.
