"why not just beat it with a club first?"

This would only incite further attack response. These dogs are bred to kill and for them to distinguish between human or canine relies heavily on the owner and how it was raised among its "family". Even then, these dogs can be very unpredictable.

The first mistake they made was taking in a pit bull that they had not bought and raised from 6 weeks old or so. I am not a big fan of this breed, but I do recognize that genetics and training can make all the diffrence in the world regarding the temperament of these dogs.

Their first clue should have been that the previous owner named the dog with a gang-culture based name. Says a lot about the previous owner, and should have stayed far away from him.

That said, sounds like the officer acted appropriately.
