Oklahoma police investigating the shooting deaths of two girls have told area residents with guns to bring them in for a test to determine whether they were used in the attack, sparking concern among those who own guns for hunting and self-defense.

According to reports in the Tulsa World the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation sent letters to members of the community who were registered as owning .40-caliber handguns suggesting they voluntarily bring in their gun or guns for a test

As badly as I would like these punks caught and hung, the Law dawg in me just says this is over stepping...............your thoughts.:what:

Agreed, already posted, and the test-firing was voluntary. Owners didn't have to show up and let the cops check out the pistols. Granted, a few articles quoted the police as saying that they'd be "checking up" on those owners that didn't show up for the voluntary testing, but they also don't explain what exactly "checking up" on them means.

already in discussion and i believe it was a voluntary test.

I read the scanned letter in another thread. It looked like it was voluntary but with veiled threats if you didn't comply.

I just wonder if police service .40SW Glocks were also tested. (yeah, right)

thats a real good idea to have the cops guns all test fired. it would save time if they are in a shooting later. or if their gun is stolen and is used later.

The letter began by saying "voluntary," but if you go to the other thread and read the full text, the balance of the letter was anything BUT voluntary. They used the 'V' word once, so they could later claim that all they were doing was asking, but in reality they made the rest of the letter sound rather mandatory.

Interestingly, there were actually a significant number of people on this very forum who didn't seem to have a problem with the notion ...

Is this really all that different than them taking a "look at" all 2004 red Toyota Tacoma pick-up's in the area because one was used in a hit-and- run accident?

What registration? Oklahoma doesn't have registration. Where'd this "list" come from?

Man, this stinks on ice. There is a whole lot more to this killing. It's as if these girls saw something they "weren't supposed to see" and paid the ultimate price. In my opinion, the investigation needs to look above and beyond Joe and Jane Average and their Joe and Jane Average gun collections.

Then there is the Fourth Amendment. Government isn't granted power to even ask to see everyones arms. Government needs a warrant. Only the Gestapo can do this stuff without a warrant.

i don't see what they think they can accomplish with this. they aren't going to find the person because he voluntarily handed them the weapon for testing. maybe they think they can use it against the people who didn't to get a warrant?
