Last year I encountered kinda the same magazine problem, but at my local(Sandy, OR) library. The library had carried "Guns 'n Ammo" for years, and I had checked out the magazine 6 or more times per year. Then when I looked for it one day it was gone. I didnt pay much attention, I figured that the current months issue hadnt been returned by someone. That would make sense because every issue was in constant use and it seemed like it was always checked out. Other business intrudes and flash forward a couple months. I went back to the library looking for the latest issue and not only are the old, back issues gone but there is no new one on the rack. I asked the librarian what had happened to their subscription and she pinched her face a bit. She said that the head of the library and the staff had decided that it wasnt "popular" enough to renew and they had a limited magazine budget. I went back to the extensive magazine section and looked thru the selection. "Indigenous Northwest nocturnal birdlife spotting & review" or some such type of magazine was on the shelves, along with every kind of woman-centered periodical, but nothing close to being gun-related. I picked one obscure mag up and saw when it had last been checked out.... Only one time that year and the year was almost over! I took this magazine, "Inflated Tire Monthly" or something like it and went back up to the library desk. I pointed out that there was a lot of magazines like this one that no one ever checked out, but they let a popular gun magazine fade away. Then the excuse was that "Guns 'n Ammo" wasnt wasnt able to withstand multiple checkouts and the covers came off too easily. Okay... I went back to the rack and got a tattered, well-thumbed copy of "Rosie O' Donnells guide to industrial feminine hygiene" and saw that the library had had to tape the cover together to get it back into circulation. I brought the magazine back up to the librarian and pointed out the fallacy of her position. Her face became red and she called the head of the library out to talk to me. I explained my position politely, and she said that it would be studied. I didnt hear anthing about it for 2 or 3 months until I asked, yet again, if they were going to bring the gun mag back. I was told that their decision was final and they really didnt consider it an issue. End of discussion. Its lovely how the liberals make decisions "For our own good" everyday, isnt it? BTW, I would appreciate it if no one here contacted or wrote my library about this, I have other ways to fight the good fight without alienating them or having them become defensive.
