After voting on Ardent's poll on what is the best full sizer service auto, I had to comment that I don't trust the 9mm in it's FMJ load used in the military. Being the 1911A1 was the only .45 listed on his poll, that's what I had to vote for. But, Ardent had a good idea. So here's my question: In your opinion, what is the best full size .45 ACP service pistol and why?:D

I vote for the 1911 also. That is one gun that I do love to shoot and carry. :)

Onjce again, when I hear the term service pistol I look to the ease of issuing it to a large group of people...and then maintaining it...

Which to me ...gives the nod to the USP...edging out the 1911

Please note...I don't own a USP...but I do own two 1911's

I opted for the CZ 97B!

But could just as well have chosen the SIG 220. I have found both to be absolutely excellent. I chose the CZ because of cost. Simple as that. Good shooting;)

I chose the USP because it's extremely accurate, recoil is tame, and it will feed anything with 100% reliability.
I do love 1911's, and own two of them, but for a full size service pistol the USP has the edge.

I vote for the Ruger P-90. They are built like a tank and will eat anything you feed it. They are also as accurate as guns costing more than twice as much.

Well, if a bit of tweaking is allowed, I'd have to go for the 1911A1 which is how I voted.

If I had to stick with something fresh outta da box, I'd have a lot of faith in the 220 or the G21... And even the HK. If I had to pin it down to one, I'd probably take the 220 because of the proper grip size.

I voted "1911", but partly because I haven't shot most of the others -

I wish Beretta made a full-sized .45 (or 10mm or 9x23), with something like 92/96 dimensions.

The USP would get my vote - incredibly reliable right out of the box. I carry one, but perfer shooting my 1911's.

If I am ever in a situation where my life depends on one of my handguns, that handgun will be my G21, if I have any say in the matter. I love 1911s, CZs, Sigs, Rugers, and most of the rest, but in a combat situation where I need a rugged, reliable, low-maintenance, accurate handgun, I'd take the Glock every single time. I appreciate all arguments about history, aesthetics, ergonomics, and whatever other reasons people may not like Glocks, but if my life depended on a handgun, those arguments wouldn't mean squat to me.

Duty Gun

I vote for the USPf. I have a few 1911's, but as stated before, "Duty". The USP has low recoil, carries 10 rounds and is DA/SA. I understand from reading different sources, that LEO upper management loves the DA part, less liability for them.

Sig P220

Gee, I am starting to think I lead a sheltered life. This is the only .45 I have fired but I own it and love it.

Greetings,

I voted USP 45F. I have one and a Springfield Loaded 1911. For a duty pistol the vote has to go to the HK. As others have mentioned, recoil is light, incredibly robust and reliable, higher capacity than a standard 1911, and of course, excellent accuracy. Can be carried cocked and locked. It is the .45 uber pistol.

If I have to pick from current production weapons, my choice is either an HK USP or the Glock 21. Never warmed up to Sigs (shot a few, but never owned one), and I cannot trust a current production 1911 with my life.

If you give me 1000 rounds to prove it with, then I can make changes as I see fit I would go with the 1911, otherwise, I stand by my original statement.

Due to my recent bad experience w/ a Springfield 1911, I could not vote for it. Now if it were a WW2 era 1911, I'd probably vote for it. But right now based on the modern handguns, I'd have to vote for the Sig, HK, or Glock.
