Speer Gold Dot is my usual carry load, but pretty soon I'm probably going to switch over to Federal's EFMJ. In winter time, with people wearing heavier clothes, it would be nice to have a bullet that can't get clogged up with heavy clothing, and will still reliably expand.

Have you considered the Hornady Critical Defense? If it got cold enough here where people actually really bundled up, i would go with the Critical Defense stuff.

I've been reviewing the Powerball, but it's hard to get away from Speer Gold dot.

I have indeed. Problem is, I'm on a tight budget. I can get the EFMJ for just a hair over $0.50/round (on Steichers), while the Hornady is right around $1/round.
I can practice that much more with the EFMJ and even build up a little stock of the stuff.

Otherwise, I'd love to use the Critical Defense.

Wow, I thought that the HST, Golden Saber, and Critical Defense all would have been more popular than that, relatively speaking.

I'm not real fussy. There are 3 that I trust to do well and will buy any of them if I'm getting a better deal. Gold Dots, Gold Sabers, Rangers all top my list.

I didn't vote in the poll as I don't really have a favorite. I usually get whatever I believe is the best value available for the money. I have been carrying gold dots in my 9mm. I have been carrying Winchester Ranger in my .40. I ran across a deal today of $30 for 50 rounds of Golden Saber .40 caliber bonded JHP so I bought a couple of boxes. I am probably going to switch to this after I run some through my guns to verify function.

DPX or Hydrashoks in the 9 and 40 right now, trying to collect some Ranger for my .40 without using it up in gleeful waste.

But for no ballistic reasons whatsoever, my favorite's are the Winchester Silvertips for my .45c. All sorts of Lone Ranger and Werewolf jokes... right there in your hand.

In .45ACP, I load the Hornady 230 gr. XTP +P JHP and in 9mm, the Hornady 147 gr. XTP JHP.

Speer Gold Dot 155gr in .40, and SGD 90gr in .380.

Golden Saber 124gr in 9mm.

Remington 158gr LHP R38S12 in my .38 snub.

That's just what I like (right now).

I voted none of the above, but really its any of the above, whatever is on sale when I need more. I buy in quantity and see no point carrying something I can't afford to practice with.

....a lawyers dream....

I am a lawyer.
I dream a lot.

Never had a dream about that.;)

I've done criminal work and I can tell you that based on my experience if a prosecutor went after someone for using handloads, he'd look like a jerk and lose the favor of the jury. It would be all too easy for the defense atty to point out to the jury that "The prosecution has no real case. The issue is self-defense. The prosecutor is telling you about hand-loads to distract you from the only thing that really matters here."
I can't imagine a prosecutor ever taking that gamble.

....a lawyers dream....I'd re-think that if it was me.

Please cite any case where this has been a significant factor. In fact I'd be interested in a verifiable citation to any case in which it has even been brought up. Even if you had a questionable enough shooting that you went to trial, and even if a prosecutor brought this up he has to bring it up for some relevant purpose. What will that be, to show intent? It seems like a point that is pretty easy to refute. Most hand loaders hand load for a number of calibers i.e. it doesn't even look very plausible that the defendant was loading up just for this caliber/gun to kill better or whatever it is people think the prosecution will say. It is easy to show that hand loading is done to save money, or even as a hobby. Further most hand loaders follow hand loading books. How is just following the book making ammo different than buying stuff off the shelf? A gold dot behind the amount of powder a book tells you is different than a factory load how. Showing use of hand loads just isn't relevant to much and arguments that it is quickly break down. The same fears about hand loads could be said about ammo with a bunch of manufacturer literature that demonstrates how much better it kills etc.

This is a non issue that just wont die.
