Benzene is in motor oil. I did post facts, read the link that I posted, there is a lot of good information there about lubrication. Here's an excerpt from the site.

Motor oils: Generally good boundary lubrication (particularly the Havoline formulations), but very poor corrosion resistance and poor resistance to open-air oxidation. In addition, their pour-point additives often contain benzene compounds, which aren't a good thing to have next to your skin on a regular basis! ATF performs better for firearms use on every count, even if it is a tad more expensive.

This is the health warning about benzene right from the MSDS.

Potential Chronic Health Effects:
CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Classified A1 (Confirmed for human.) by ACGIH, 1 (Proven for human.) by IARC. MUTAGENIC
EFFECTS: Classified POSSIBLE for human. Mutagenic for mammalian somatic cells. Mutagenic for bacteria and/or yeast.
TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Classified Reproductive system/toxin/female
[POSSIBLE]. The substance is toxic to blood, bone marrow, central nervous system (CNS). The substance may be toxic to
liver, Urinary System. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.

Yes Mobil 1 may contain benzine, for that matter so does most oil based paints, but we still use them. So does gasoline, ever splash some on yourself while fueling your car or lawnmower? How about paint thinner, or paint stripper? Even wearing gloves the fumes are still there. Benzine is in many many commercial items we all purchase and use safetly with no harm. Just how much benzine do you think you might be exposed to while handling a firearm? We know it would be an infinitesimal amount. And I might add just what makes one think any of the gun do not contain any benzine?

Further more the lead exposer is probably much greater problem while shooting, should we give up shooting because of this, I think not.

I read the site you posted, mayhap you should do a search on further on this. Try a google search for "Mobil 1 used as a gun oil".

Use what you wish, as will I, but in the end Mobil 1 IS a good lube for general use on firearms and for most other applications needing a light lube.

I KNOW A LOT OF THE AR BUNCH SAY THEY USE IT.

as little that is used on the gun and I'm not getting any on me i cant see changing , as for ATF that is a very strong cleaner type of lube, i would think it would be way worse, this is why transmissions shops say if you have never changed the tranny fluid ,DON'T DO IT NOW, as it will clean the varnish off and it will stick in the valve body.

but with this said i will do some homework on the mobil 1.

thanks for the info you have started

I like Breakfree CLP but for keeping the rust away I use Weapons Shield on all my guns.

I have an Italian made replica of a 1890 single action revolver. I had used several different products on it but could not keep the rust away. Finally I broke down and bought some Weapons Shield. Since applying WS to the Italian gun there has been no problem whatsoever with rust. It's been about a year with no rust and I'm totally amazed. There is zero rust on this gun and I couldn't keep it off before.

As far as I'm concerned Weapons Shield is the real deal.

I have been using Lucas gun oil. Seems to work pretty good. I dont usually get real particular about oils. I use 3 in 1 or sewing machine oil. I had a bottle of Hoppes that I used up , it worked good.

I use breakfree when I run a boresnake through my shotgun at the club. I ran out of that and used a spray remoil. They both did what I wanted them to.

I use gun grease where it needs to be also. I dont even know what brand I have in my cleaning kit. I have some Beretta grease I use also.

Nice, EKA. I use this lube I got from Radioshack, I've been using it for about 3 years now, and love it. It's pretty thick, and doesn't seem to attract much dirt.

I was using just CLP, then I started using Rem-Oil, then I used CLP and moly grease, now I just use M-Pro7. I just started I will see if I like it in a few months.

CLP has been the best so far though. Rem-Oil evaporates quickly, moly attracted carbon buildup, and the CLP eavaporates but not near as fast as Rem-Oil. So I will just see how well this M-Pro7 sticks around.

I knew Break Free CLP was good but never knew just how good thanks for posting the study/test.

despite the post about benzine being in motor oil, you'll still find members that resist changing to a gun lube, rather than automotive oil, for their firearms.

Good luck finding out what's in your "Gun lube." There are no industry standards for "gun oil," there is far less research on them. At the very least, use something approved for Military service.

I prefer to use known, quantified, and reasonably priced lubricants.

For folks who are interested:

Hoppes main ingredient: Kerosene

Rem Oil main ingredient: Mineral Spirits

Mix equal parts Kerosene, mineral spirits, and Dexron transmission fluid and voila! Ed's Red

(You can add acetone too, but I prefer not to. it's too harsh on plastic and wood finishes for my taste)

Shooters Choice is my favorite but was not listed. :(
Breakfree is my 2nd choice and is what I voted for.
Hoppes is my 3rd choice.
Rem Oil is my 4th choice.

I use Lucas gun oil. It is red, and sold by the Lucas Oil people. I also use Lucas oil stabalizer in my vehicles. The gun oil is red, and stays in place really well. The best part is that it is scent free, (to me at least), which makes it great for a deer rifle. It makes my AR and other guns run like, well, like a well oiled machine.

And I am just going to go ahead and say that my firearms all are investments for me. I don't mind spending a little extra money if it means I can keep them operating safely and effectively. In the zombie apocalypse, if it comes down to it, it's nice to know I can clean my AK with diesel fuel and lubricate it with Mobil1. Until then, I don't mind springing for CLP, Tetra, or Hoppes.

I have been using Weapon Shield as a CLP over all the surfaces (mostly as a rust preventative), but just bought a 1lb. tub of synthetic high-temp wheel bearing grease to put on the frame rails/slide. I'll probably run this combo until winter, when I'll switch back to just Weapon Shield.

I've find that throughout the summer, all the oils I've been using end up running down the slid and end up on the holsters, or elsewhere on the gun. As a protectant, I will still coaat all surfaces with Weapon Shield. But during hot weather, I'll be running a bit of grease too.
