For all you who use Mobil-1 oil to lube thier guns, what weight do you use, and do you use grease in some places, and oil in others? Thanks-

I have been using 15w 50 Moble One. I picked up a quart at an auction for less then a quarter. It works well, even in cold weather. I have been shooting in wind chills of 17 below. It stays put where I need it to on my handguns and shotguns.

The only firearms I use grease on are my 1903 Springfield and my M1 Garand. I will start using lighter grease on the rifles in the winter because I had my first FTF in my Garand the last time I went shooting. It was very cold and I think the grease was just thickening up due to temprature. As the rifle warmed up a little, I had no more problems.

I use Mobil 1 Vtwin 20-50. Motorcycle detergency anti corrosion pkg is stronger. This should be good down to - 50f if you are in colder weather 0-40 is good to -76f

I use ATF on moving parts and internals...then use moter oil on exterior parts, just a light coating.

I switched to the ATF a few years ago, as it's lubricating properties are superior, even when compared to the better synthetic oils. Some of the better gunsmith also recommend ATF.

Don't use the Mobil 1 oil but I do use the grease on M1s. The grease stays for a long time without hardening. I took out an M1 last summer that was in long term storage for about 18 months. Cleaned and greased with Mobil 1 grease before being put away.It worked fine with nothing done to it after the storage period.

I use Breakfree on everything else.

I believe that the military recommends using ATF for cleaning & synthetic oil for lubrication on AR15's when something like CLP isn't available.

ATF seems to keep transmissions pretty clean...

ATF is mineral oil based and has a lot of detergent in it. I don't know about the synthetics. Anybody mix their own Ed's Red cleaner?
Side note - there was an article somewhere that said a 50-50 mix of ATF and acetone was the best penetrating oil they tested.

castrol gtx 20-50

i pick it because there is always a little left after i change my oil a little left over oil will go a long way

Here you go.

Pour Points, COC Flash Points and viscosities for all brands and grades of synthetic motor oil:

As for those who prefer ATF over synthetic motor oils: ATF has less EP/AW additives, corrosion inhibition and detergency (dispersants that keep contaminants suspended for easier cleaning) than (synthetic or regular) motor oil. Why would anyone choose it over motor oil when it is so lacking?

BluEyes,

Isn't ATF abrasive? If it had superior lubricating properties it would be used for motor oil.

I use Mobil 1 and have for years. I will put a bit of teflon grease on the rails of a semi auto but everything else gets Mobil 1.

Since my guns don't have roller bearing friction points, I'd stick with an oil that has an A3/B3 rating indicating HTHS shear protection.

Rotella 15W40 is an ACEA rated motor oil for use in flat tappet engines.
SOME of the Mobil 1 oils are rated with a high (above 4) shear rating.
Read the label.

I think this whole subject has been over thought. From vegetable oil to animal fat, from machine oil to engine oil, from mineral oil to ATF, it all works. Even water will reduce friction between two moving metal parts. This has been turned into something much more complicated than it actually is.

So your point is that water can be used to lubricate our weapons? :scrutiny:

D'Oh! :banghead: .....and here we've been wasting money buying oil when the ideal lubricant is "on tap" in our homes.

:scrutiny:

lol,481,I said water would reduce friction,I didn't say it would do it well. Pay attention!

OK, but I bet your guns are really rusty. :)

Exactly what I was thinking as I was reading about those who claimed using ATF. Regarding what weight of syn.oil do I use? Right now it a compination of 10W/30 and 5W/20 as its the drippings fromwhats left when filling engine at oil change. I do not think a firearm is going to know the diference in oil weight like a vehicle. None of my firearms have starters with a 12 volt battery. However a few do have keys.
