This specific list is at http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/worst_case_scenarios/4220574.html

They have an article suggesting what you should have in your home, car, "to go bag" (gee, I thought we invented this term) to survive "earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes". Anyway, guess what obvious personal safety device is missing?

I already left a suggestion. Someone beat me to it (suggesting a 12 guage in the comments on the PDF chart of what to own), but I think it needs to be repeated.

I would like to see what they would suggest to survive the other disaster possibility these days - "urban riot". Probably they'd suggest Mace and a bullet proof jacket.

Here's the first 7 replies. Popular Mechanics is taking an earful on this one. Mine is #2 (JPP was a typo, should have been JHP):

7. RE: 107 Pieces of Survival Gear for Your Car, Home and To-Go Bag
I agree with the previous replies. The first "item" that came to mind in regards to a disaster was "firearms". All the canned goods and bottled water in the world won't be good against an armed thug who wants to take them from you! Let Katrina be a lesson... While I own several weapons, I would also recommend a 12-gauge shotgun and a good semi-auto pistol as required survival gear.

6. RE: 107 Pieces of Survival Gear for Your Car, Home and To-Go Bag
I have to agree with the first 2 comments, a firearm should have been the first item listed. To rely on the govt, or the benevolence of others, to provide security and protection is absurd.

I agree. And make SURE that you have enough ammo to last as well as knowing what you are doing. If you draw, yuo'd better be prepared to kill. They are. Practice, Practice, Practice.

4. RE: 107 Pieces of Survival Gear for Your Car, Home and To-Go Bag
A firearm should be at the top of the list. In the aftermath of a disaster you are responsible for your own security. Perhaps you guys didn't pay much attention to New Orleans post-Katrina.

great stuff. thsnks

2. RE: 107 Pieces of Survival Gear for Your Car, Home and To-Go Bag
Why is it always so hard for the media to acknowledge that a gun might not be a bad thing to have if a real emergency occurs? My additions: Backpack: Glock 27, 2 mags, 50 rounds JHP. Car: Bushmaster AR-15, 4 mags, 100 rounds FMJ, 100 rounds JPP Home: Remington 870, 40 rounds slugs, 40 rounds 00 buckshot.

1. RE: 107 Pieces of Survival Gear for Your Car, Home and To-Go Bag
Disasters often bring out the scumbags, human predators. If you want to be sure of survival, some type of firearm is of utmost importance. A 12 gauge shotgun with a box of buckshot would be at the top of my list because of its intimidating defensive value.

I left a comment, but I do not know if it is going to be approved. Whatever. Who cares? When it comes to stupidity in this country I think we have reached critical mass.

Smarta$$. Your reply is similar to the other guy who sarcasticly wrote "thug baby!".
Yeh. The “Thug baby” comment appeared after I submitted my comment for approval. I wish I had not posted my sarcastic comment now, as all the “thug” comments are beginning to sound stupid.

Jeez, I can remember when you could order guns out of ads in the back of this magazine. Now they won't even recomend one to save your life.
