ported barrels.............

indeed it is, though I have had a some refuse to do it as they didnt want to port the barrel incorrectly causing too much gas to escape from one side, top, or bottom and thus negatively affecting the felt recoil.. dunno if that would happen or not.. SOUNDS possible...

I HAD to get my SW329PD ported so I could shoot 305 grain CorBon .44 Magnums...an airlite pistol is no fun to shoot with rounds that pack that much punch.

I sent it to SW and they sent it to MagnaPort (I think). It helps considerably. Without it the pistol would still be shootable but it would be painful, literally.

Oh, I carry it as a backup gun for Brown Bear while fishing in Alaska. Light, reliable, impervious to the weather. Great gun.

Asquires2, here's Magnaport's website if you're interested: http://www.magnaport.com/

They can add porting to guns other than S&W; I asked if they could add it to a Ruger .454 SRH and they said yes.

I've heard good & bad things about it. It might make your gun louder, and some people claim it spews lead. Most of the comments I've heard are positive, though, like DFW1911's.

Yeah Ive heard it makes your gun louder but Ill be using ear protection regardless. Thanks for the site and Ill be contacting them this week.

The turn around was very fast - I've only had good service from S&W; they handled the Magnaport transition as well.

I don't remember the price, but recoil went from "excruciating" to "manageable" with higher power loads.

Well worth the money spent. Otherwise it would be a safe queen or on the market.

My buddy has a freedom arms 454 that has been ported and I am positive that it will do perment hearing damage, but it is pleasent to shoot. It takes alot of recoil and muzzle rise out of firing.

Why do you say that, be 199% sure its what you want?

It can't exactly be undone.

Definitely true. However it may be an addition that another buyer might be interested in if it doesn't work well for you.

Well, this is the handgun section, so I assume you'll be doing it to a pistol. For a revolver, they typically just port the barrel. Magnaport has been in the business for years, and they know how to do it right. They can do porting on a rifle, as well, but for a rifle it's actualy better to have your muzzle threaded and install the MagnaBrake. It's more effective and doesn't involve putting holes in your barrel. For an autoloading pistol, there are a few options, including longer barrels with ports or replacing your bushing with a compensator.

extended & ported barrel question

first, the gun & specs

Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match 10mm 4.75 bbl
20lb Wolff recoil spring
Sprinco recoil buffer

what I have in mind is to buy the 6 inch replacement barrel from EAA and have it ported to help control recoil on high power rounds

first question is whether anyone knows if the general dimensions of the replacement barrel (except for length) will allow it to fit and work within the match slide

second question is whether this will provide any gains over the stock match barrel that will make it worth spending the money on

third question is what kind of porting would be best....I've seen extended glock barrels that had the porting on the top cut at an angle towards the muzzel end and other types that put the porting more towards the sides that look like just holes with no angling

I'm handloading my own rounds and experimenting with different loads working towards hunting level loads

this foray into customization falls well into the "because I can" category, so keep that in mind if the response is gonna be "stupid idea"....I'm just sorta fielding ideas at this time and I am plenty happy with the gun in it's current configuration

thanks
