I have a Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum with a 5.5 in. barrel and fire both Buffalo Bore Heavy .44 Magnum +P+ and Garrett's 44 mag Hammerhead ammo and was toying with the idea of porting the gun for better recoil control. I'd like some thoughts other members have on the issue of porting this firearm.

With properly fitting aftermarket grips, would you need to? My Redhawks were massive enough to absorb the recoil of even the stiffest loads.

Back in the late '80s, I had an S&W 629 w/ 8-3/8" barrel in .44mag. My buddy had a Redhawk with a 7" plus barrel in .44mag. His gun was slightly heavier than my Smith. We both had them mag-n-ported at the same time. Both of us noticed a significant reduction in muzzle flip and increased shooter comfort with hunting loads. I felt it to be a worthy modification as did he.

I say go for it.
