Hi

I have read a general consensus that the pre 64's are the best, but can anyone tell me if there is an era where the post 64's were better than other post 64's. In particular, there is a very pretty angle eject on gunbroker with a checkered pistol grip stock that I am looking at.

thank you

Richard

I am no expert but have owned a few 94's over the years and handled a few in shops. It has been my observation that the quality can vary widely and I cannot pedict which are good and bad by specific years of manufacture. I would prefere to have my hands on a 94 before purchase. I've seen a lot that were well put together and shot well and others that were junk.

I have had better experience with the later ones with the tang safeties.

I've owned a dozen and they are all pretty much the same, at least to me. Mostly, I've owned 30-30s and pistol cartridge rifles (45LC and 357). All of them were fine for casual shooting/hunting. But, for competition, they stove pipe way too easily. I ended going to a 92 for comp.

The only post '64 one I have is this AE one made in the mid 1980's (I think). It is a pre-safety USA made gun, .30-30 with a 24" barrel. The quality seems to be excellent.

I've heard the immediate post '64 ones and the 1970's versions varied in quality...don't know that however.

I have a checked walnut of the M94 with tang safety and AE, one of the last to built with real walnut and it shoots everything and really likes the 160gr Hornady .30-30.
Hopes this helps.

It's my understanding that post-64 94s were made with some stamped parts, substituting for machined parts (the magazine follower, for example) for a few years before Winchester (U.S. Repeating Arms) began again making the 94 with better-made parts. I think all "Angle-Ejects" were well-made, if not up to the standards of pre-64 models. My impressions are solely based on what I've read/heard, though I do own an Angle-Eject 94 which appears pretty-well put together ( however, the trigger pull leaves a lot to be desired).

There are a bunch of post-64 variations. I have owned several. The only ones I'd really avoid are the 64-~70ish ones with the stamped lifters. My personal favorites are the AEs that are pre-safety.
