Great stories....I particularly like the moose hunt with the Contender. I wish the photo was a little clearer. I made a 30-30 contender carbine this year for my kids to hunt with. I wasn't quite ready to figure the 7-30 out.

My youngest son Ajay and I were hunting near Fort Peck reservoir in northeastern MT some years back. Up until this point, I'd been present for all his deer kills, either right next to him or within sight.

This time, we'd hunted pretty hard all day with no deer down yet. I was getting pretty beat as we'd probably walked 10 miles through the badlands and coulees. My buddy Adam knocks a muley down and we go to help him get it up to the truck. Well Ajay was still wanting to hunt some hills over by the Missouri river and I sent him off that way with a radio and the rangefinder. My buddy and I got his deer dragged up to where we could load it, and began working our way back out of the area, when my radio cracked. It was Ajay.

"I got one down! Come meet me over the top I'm in one of the draws down towards the river!"

We work our way over there and find him on the dirt road in the diminishing light. He'd hunted his way across the face of the hills, and caught this buck out in the open. Ranged him at 360 yards, and one shot from the Ruger 77 .260 planted him right there. We got him dressed and then dragged him up the steep hillside a few hundred yards to the truck, and with two muley bucks loaded we idled off through the badlands with a sip or two of Fireball whiskey and traded stories.

Great times.

I was able to take my daughter out this season for 2 weeks straight, mornings, mid day and afternoons. We hit the rut perfect and saw plenty of action in that time. She was finally able to connect on the last morning of the hunt. She certainly learned a lot in our time together and we both have memories that we will cherish together.

The buck got as close as 20 yards to us but she wound up taking the shot at 123 yards. This thing wouldn't stop for a shot very long and it was frustrating for me looking on but she remained calm during the 15 minutes of the buck running does in front of us. It finally chased a couple of hot does a couple hundred yards away from us and our hearts sank but returned a few minutes later. I was able to yell at it and it stopped broadside long enough for her to pull the trigger

She used a suppressed self built 260 Rem. 140gr Berger VLD hand load high through the shoulder was a DRT.

This was her first deer though she has been shooting for several years and practices regularly out to 600 yards with various rifles.

We entered the draw before sunrise and found our ambush point.

Banks(pictured), my son, sat 40 yards to my side with a good view above

the draws leading into the 60 ft rock bluffs. We sat untill being

uncomfortable and sleepy, I'd say 10:00 am. Rather than move from a

location known to have our prey, we stayed put. Shortly after 10am the

squirrels appeared. At least eight of them were running around at one point!

After the first 3 shots the critters realized they were in danger and began to

leave the area!

And dubbleA, dang it man. I think I commented on that in another thread, but it bears repeating. What a first deer! Most of us hunt a lifetime and don't get one like that.

I still have a couple of years before I can get one of mine in the stand. However, my 5 year old daughter has watched me and her mom skin and bone deer and hogs since she was a baby. So the second weekend when we had a spike strung up she came out with my 2 year old boy and explained the following with her arm around him
-It is a white tail deer
-it is absolutely NOT a reindeer
-It is gods creature
-It is harvested for the meat and is what we eat for dinner.

She then proceeded to spary it down for us while we finished it.

Fast forward to last weekend. I bring in a good 8 point in the truck before I field dress it because it is raining and 36 degrees. They all come out to see it. PIctures and all of that. All of a sudden we started looking around and my 2 year old was gone. He found him hiding in the Mule(ATV) crying. He was scared to death of that thing. I guess in a little ones mind there is a bi difference in the two scenarios. Anyway my five year old sat at the edge of the barn and watched us field dress it. Then she went inside.

As comfortable as she is with the dead animals, she is scared to death of guns. She hates the bang. She is also scared of fireworks and even loud music. She iwll have to get over that before anything else.

I was 12 years old and it was the last Fri. of the 2007 rifle season, and I hadn't seen much all year. My cousin and I were walking along the side of a field when we saw a doe standing about 125 yards away. Offhand shot with my .243 and I had my first deer. Happiest kid alive! :)

After hunting most of the opening day and seeing no bucks, my two grandsons were ready to hang it up around 3 in the afternoon. My son, wife and I convinced them to stick it out for another couple of ours. Within an hour both grandsons had filled there tags. If anything they learned it isn't always easy. Whether you fill or not, the fun is "in the hunt".
As you can see the boys are very proud of their muleys, dad and grandpa are proud of them too.
