I have been using Unique and 2400 for a long time and would like to try something different. I use 158 gr lead and 125 gr jacketed bullets in my Ruger revolvers.
Thanks for help

I personally don't think you will gain anything, except two more half-full cans of powder on your bench and $50-60 bucks less in your wallet.

Can't do much better then what you have for those two bullets in that caliber.

I agree that you are already 2 of the best powders available for the 357. I would not change at this point.

For a little more oomph, you might try H110 (296). For real powder puff loads with lead bullets, Trail Boss will do. Other than that, you've got it covered.

What barrel length and for what purpose ? Any plans for different bullets ?

I might suggest that if you haven't tried H110 (296), you might enjoy the little extra something it offers. It seems to be in a class all it's own. As to how it behaves, it's a powder that even at the starting charge is difficult to differentiate from the upper end loads. I don't know if it is compatable with non jacketed bullets?

2400 is my go-to powder in 357, that said I just picked up some Powder Pro 300-MP because of an article by Brian Pierce in Hand loader #274.

I am a fan of Unique for many purposes including 20 and 28 ga shotshells. I like W296 (aka H110) for max 357 mag loads but 2400 is a good powder as well.

I love Winchester 231 with Bear Creek moly coated 158 grain round nose flat point bullets, 4.2 grains (I think at 1.455") and great accuracy with no lead and very little smoke for *38 special*. For magnum, I would use the same bullet and change specs just a bit. For jacketed bullets, (premium for me), *357 mag* I load 125 grain hollow points with anywhere from 19.4 grains - 22.0 grains of H110 with mag primers and a heavy crimp. I really like Sierra 140 grain jacketed hollow cavity and, I think, 16.7 grains of H110. Very accurate, so accurate offhand that I get 4 holes for 6 rounds. That is in my 4" gp100. My 6" gp100 likes 125 grain xtp's with 19.4 grains of H110. Good stuff. If you want to experiment, I would buy a pound of H110 or W296 and a couple boxes of mag primers. Use them at book specs, but on the high side, and watch the flame and boom. Awesome.

Power Pistol! For sure. Similar application to Unique but it meters way better, it is much more consistent (chronographed), burns much cleaner, and is capable of higher velocities within the pressure. The max load in .38 spits out the Rim Rock 158 LSWCHP w/gc at 950fps avg from my 4" GP100. Barrel is clean as a whistle afterward.

Power Pistol. :)

(I have tried AA#5, HS-6, Unique, 2400, Trail Boss, Red Dot, Bullseye, AA#9, and probably some more) AA#5 is also very good, and 2400 is always on my bench.

Blue Dot !!
I've been there and I think there are better choices, my best results with Blue Dot was with 180gr XTPs but again I think there are better choices.

For jacketed 125s, I like AA #9, less powder and it it gives up little to H110.

Thanks for replies. I am mostly target shooting and steel plates nothing fancy. i have used up all my powder and need to restock and would like to try a different one especially for the light lead loads. I thought i might try one on the jacketed as well not necessarily mag loads.
Thanks again

My GP100 loves 125g JHP with 10.0g of Power Pistol. Clean, plenty of speed, accurate as anything, and the powder is damn cheap.

I have tried AA#5 as a replacement for Unique, it has worked well for warm 38sp, light 357 mag. 9x18 mak. 45 acp.
Now I about out of #5 and thought I might try something else, I'm thinking VVn340 or Universal.

In that case you will probably really like HS-6. I use HS-6 for a lot of applications including .38 Special +P and light to medium hot .357 Magnum loads. It's especially accurate with lead bullets whereas some other powders might not be.

If you would rather a Accurate Arms powder give AA#5 a try. Powder Pistol is a good powder for jacketed bullets but I'm not sure it works well with lead bullets. (but it might, I've never tried)

roc, check out Red Dot. A bit faster than Unique and can be used in.. nevermind. Check it out. I use it for a lot of stuff.

I checked some of my handloading data with 125gr JHPs - 686P/6";

W296, 20.7grs, Win, WSPM;
125gr JHP Sierra - 1635fps, ES 49fps
125gr GOLD Dot - 1626fps, ES 60fps

AA #9, 17.4grs, S&W nickel, WSPM;
125gr Golden Saber - 1653fps, ES 43fps, [email protected]"@25yds off a hand rest

17.7grs increased MV by only 08fps.

This 686/6" is very accurate, as is a 6" Trooper MkIII; but then a number of other 357 mag platforms are also very accurate. :)

roc1, be sure to let us know what you end up trying, and how it works for you. It's always good to hear firsthand reports.

My vote is still for Power Pistol, by the way. :)

Get some Power Pistol. Nice big flash at the muzzle!
Not very pronounced in broad daylight, but spectacular indoors and in low light.
