I used up all of my Varget and I need some suggestions on another powder to try strictly for the 95gr SST bullet in my 243.

My 243 loves this bullet in front of 40.3 grains of IMR 4831. I'm sure there are other powders that do well, but my rifle shot so well with this combo that I just stuck with it.

I used H4350 with 95gr Ballistic Tips with much success. It didn't hurt that I also used that powder for 85gr bullets in the .243, 130's in .270, and everything in .30-06; it's one of the great do anything powders for slightly overbore cartridges.

My wife's .243 does exceptionally well with RL-17 and Winchester Supreme 780. But I've always heard that IMR 4831 is the powder to use with heavy bullets in the .243

Wow, there's a gazillion different powders I have good results with using bullets in that weight range.

I really like IMR-7828 & RL22 a lot lately.

Wow. Usually there's a commonly recommended powder in these kind of threads, but so far there's a wide variety recommended here.

I suppose I should give 4451 & 4166 a try some day. But it's hard for me to justify after so many years of great results with the older well established propellants. I guess it's kind of an old dog new tricks thing for me.

4166 has the speed, density, pressure, velocity of IMR4895 in Quickload, but has the Copper and Temp coating.

The two 8# jugs cost me $457.66 delivered in Sept 2015 from Selway.
It looks like prices are about the same and still available there and a couple other places.
Even with moly and the Copper coating on the 4166 powder, the 125 gr 300WM at 3500 fps was Copper fouling in a new Krieger barrel. That was holding that rifle back to 500 yards. I got a buck in the back, running away at 250 yards.
The 120 gr moly in 6.5-06 was slow to foul with 4166 powder at 3200 fps in a new Shilen select match barrel. That barrel was ready to kill out to 600, and I made a hail Mary kill at 629 yards on a small doe.
David Tubb or Bart Bobbitt would have shot those animals between the eyes, but I am doing the best I can with what I am.

I haven't tested 4166 yet in .243 or .223, but I'll tell ya this, I absolutely love it in .308 Win. It's my most accurate load for my .308. I've even thought about testing it in my .30-30.

My hunting load for my Tikka 243 with 95 gr. Nosler Partitions is 40.5 or 41 grs. of H4350 (it likes them both equally). Trouble is I can't find any H4350 anywhere at a reasonable price. I have about 10 lbs of Varget so once it stops raining I will give it a try. Guess it is a good idea in these times to have good loads developed from more than one powder.

H4895 can be used in virtually any application you can think of. If you go to Hodgdon's load data (online, easily searchable) you will find H4895 listed for virtually every caliber and bullet. It also allows you to load down to just 60% of Max if you want reduced recoil loads. This is why it's my powder of choice at the moment, because nothing I know of (admittedly I haven't been doing this long) is as versatile.

I've found that carefully measured, it's accuracy is pretty stunning too. Even with reduced loads. I shot a .5 MOA group at 300 yards two days ago using a reduced load in my .308.

I'd at least give it a shot if you can find it.

Magnum powder

I was getting very frustrated trying to work up a load for a .243 I own. I had tried a few powders (H4350, H4831, Varget) and quite a few different size charges. Finally, I dont know why but I pulled my H1000 off the shelf that I usually reserve for my 7mm RemMag and wouldnt you know, it shot half MOA at 100 yards in the .243. Of course you need to start small and work your way up, but I had best luck with 47.5 gn H1000 and a CCI #200. Good luck!!
