Powder question?

I don't get it. Spent the last few days scouring the interwebs for smokeless powder, and unless you are willing to pay a king's ransom from the scalpers on GB, it seems it has become unobtanium unless it's some obscure weird powder that nobody uses. All the gold standard stuff is, well...gone. All the major carriers say the same thing; "unavailable, no backorder"
This is powder, folks. This is what powder mills and manufacturers DO for a living, day in, day out. Now, I understand they might be somewhat behind due to covid shutdowns and such, but c'mon...every powder, every brand? It's just not making any sense. Any insiders with their finger on the pulse of the industry that can shed some light on this?

Yep, there is a powder shortage, yes scalpers are cheating. This in not a typical "Economics 101, supply and demand situation", but rather mega-panic buying, hoarding situation ("I gotta get mine now!). And this is probably the 831st "No components available?" thread in the forums I frequent and nothing new from a year ago; same complaining, same conspiracy theories, same blaming...

This is EXACTLY supply/demand. Demand may be artificially high, but the rule still applies--price is what clears the market and those willing to pay through the nose perceive a greater value/utility for the resource. The higher profits help to keep business going during supply shortages--otherwise, you would find no commercial supplies, only gov't taking over (nationalizing) or forcing companies to stay open just for them. Otherwise, it gives the company additional capital assets for improving the company.
In the US, I was told, procurement for nuclear bomb supplies is DX1 (you either produce or we nationalize) and ICBMs can be DX2 (make or we will force you to make and station military in your plants). If your product has been qualified, you might be forced to keep making. Never heard of it happening, but we passed that information down to our suppliers when they got screwy.
DO means make before commercial uses. DX stomps on DO.

Governments are the main consumers of ammunition, and typically have large contracts locked in. Sport shooting gets what's left from that. Reloading gets what's left from that. Production capacity can only slowly be expanded. A little bump in demand puts a big squeeze on the market.
Maybe for one or two powders, but not the huge myriad of different powders out there. Mfg are making what is needed by ammo companies to make ammo NOW. As they get time, other lines will be made - we are our own worst enemy when it comes to supply and demand

The saying used to be Obama was the best gun salesman in the world. But the combo of c19 and sleepy joe will overtake him.

Just a note for you younger guys shortages happen every time a dem is elected. When things get better put back some extra supply's and then double it.

I’m seeing primers for the first time, but 200 limits, at my LGS.

My LGS always had powder, just not the “frontline” stuff. I usually have three or four back ups, but I had to get creative this time! But I’m seeing the main powders trickling back in, and with limits. Which it is what it is.

Sage advice! I got caught with a low stash of SPP this time. Won’t happen again.

To the younger crowd, I would not have the urge to hoard at this time either. Prices will continue to fall. Stock will continue to rise. One to two years is the time to buy in stock, when prices stabilize.

Actually, I should know better. Every time industry gets caught up and prices return to (somewhat) normal, I say to myself "Self, you've got a couple pounds of XXX and that should last me for at least a year" or something to that effect. And then another mini-crisis hits, and me and every other mother's son realizes there isn't enough to last past that year, and then the hoarding/price gouging starts...again. I thought the hoarding after Sandy Hook was a one-off. I should have realized this cycle is going to run over and over again in this country with all the shenanigans going on. The guys are right...buy it when it's normal pricing and good availability, and you think you have more than enough.
