Powder shortage

If it makes ya'll feel any better, the Cabela's I go to in Ohio was loaded with primers when I went there a couple of weeks ago but their power selection was a bit pathetic.

Another sporting goods store I go to in Ohio also had bunches of primers and had quite a few containers of different powders including some 8 lb. versions.

I think things are getting a bit better.

Cabela's in No. ID did have primers. No problem there but there was no powder to be found. Not much brass on the pegs either.

. But ALL the powder is gone...nothing!

Does anyone know the REAL story?

The real story? They didn't order enough at the right time. My local store has more powder than he's ever had in the past three years. He can't even put it all on the shelves.

And no, he doesn't ship.

They may be subject to hazmat fees, but the seller could eat those charges as an incentive.

Incentive? He's selling everything he gets his hands on at full retail plus. Why would he give any incentives? Buying online means shipping and hazmat fees. It's part of the purchase and if you can't find it locally you can do without or pay the piper.

Old Powder Data

One of our club members dropped this document Material Safety Data Sheet April 2009
It States. The following smokeless powder are distributed by Hodgdon Powder Company
H4227 ( Also Known as AR2205 = ADI in Australia
H4895 ( "" "" "" "" "" "" " AR2205H
H4198 ( AR2207
VARGET AR2208
H4350 AR2209
And it go on right up to Benchmark also know as BM2
I won't put all data as it will take to long but it give you an idea how long the manufacture have been liaison with each other.
And now i can see why we also have a big shortage down under.
The last comment from ADI that there AP70 powder had a manufacture process problem and it will be unavailable until NO COMMENT QUOTE!!!
I don't think things will improve in the long term unless they get there act together as the profits are not going down range by us club shooters

The manufacture process problem only affected the powders that are the "Clays" family in the US, AP70N being Universal Clays for Hodgdon. The "process problem" was a fire in a specific part of one of the ADI Plants. The fact that the statement on the ADI web site only referenced one powder, not all 3 Clays versions, makes me think that they're producing the other 2 but ran into a separate issue with AP70N.

We're seeing lots of H4198, H4895, H4350, Varget, and most other Hodgdon powders around here, but no Clays. All of the other ADI-sourced Hodgdon powders seem to be flowing just fine, albeit into a world with a much higher than normal demand.

I just returned to reloading after decades of inactivity. I used to just buy a pound of powder and, when I needed another, I'd buy another. Now I keep enough on hand for 4000 - 5000 rounds including bullets, primers, etc.

I'm not wanting to do without for months at a time like I just did.

And I'm betting many thousands are doing the same - stocking up. Some to the point of hoarding which is natural in times of not enough to go around. I find if I cruise through 2 or 3 suppliers like Powder Valley a couple times a day online, I find what I need. Powder comes and goes in 1 day now....PV will have Unique at 5 am Monday morning and by Tuesday night it is out of stock.

I have to buy it where I see it which is frustrating but I don't shoot competitively or have need of powder/components RIGHT NOW or else. Many others do.

How about this? If you don't want it, step aside the guy behind will buy it all instead......... Why would anyone eat upwards of $100 in added costs when the markup isn't that great to begin with?
